Flag Burning "debate" on Fox/Dayside. Hmmm...
Edited on Wed Jun-28-06 01:08 PM by jadedconformist
I was in the Deli at my work this afternoon and they always have it on Fox News. Their show, Dayside, was on and they were "debating" (more like all agreeing) that their should be an amendment to the Constitution which bans flag burning. They then had some guy on there (not sure who he was) that gave the flawed analogy that burning the flag would be like going up to the Lincoln Memorial and painting on it. He then continued with, "You can go up there and speak your mind but once you begin to desecrate it; that's when it's wrong."

Of course everybody cheered.

I sat there for a moment and I thought to myself, "there are already laws in place that prevent people from doing that to the Lincoln Memorial. Umm...such as the destruction of the property, to say the least. Now if we were to destroy REPLICAS of the Lincoln Memorial that WE bought ourselves, even if you consider it disrespectful, how can you vilify anybody who does that and/or write laws about that? I can't stand watching Fox News because it's pretty much a big orgy of like-minded idiots in a fool's paradise.

3. Would it be OK for George Bush to spray paint his name on the Memorial?
I mean, he is the decider, right?

4. what if you draw a flag on a big piece of cardboard paper..
...and then burn it - Would that be illegal? Where does it stop? What if you shoot a TV that has the flag on it? etc. etc. I saw these points on another thread, but it's a good point. Where would the line be drawn?

7. Which is worse
I find wearing clothes made out of flag material just as disrespectful as flag burning. It happens way more than flag burning, which probably doesn't happen once a year.

I remember seeing Barbara Bush in a 'flag' shawl at the Repug Convention, I think it was. Now there ought to be an amendment against that.

The Repugs are really big on disrespecting the flag when they want to flaunt their 'patriotism'!!!

9. One thing I understand

I would understand somebody getting arrested because they went to a school, pulled the flag down and set it on fire. However, if somebody wanted to demonstrate and burned a flag which they purchased (which probably says "Made in China) in order to demonstrate their unhappiness with the way things are going in America, I don't see how that is so bad. There are worse things in this world. Not to mention, what if somebody pees on the flag? What if somebody flicks a booger on the flag? What about if somebody stares at the flag wrong?

Also, most Christians are Republicans...and Christian's aren't supposed to worship statues/idols, etc. They can burn as many flags as they want but the American mindset should be that they can't destroy our American spirit.

That said, I think it would be great to burn all the "Rebel" flags.
