Why can't my kids burn miniature crosses at school?
I mean, if it's about the sheets, I'm willing to compromise.

But I wonder about during lunch or recess. Or is it a runs with scissors sort of thing?

6. Nope.
They're taking the "See you at the pole" ceremonies a little bit further.

Instead of writing the names of non-christian students that need to be prayed for, they're going to put their names on little pop stick crosses and burn them.

70. Wow, I can't believe a district would allow that on liability grounds
A school can't discriminate based on content of the speech, but it can impose content neutral time, place and manner restrictions, so long as they are facially neutral and universally applied. While the school couldn't prohibit students from forming a group of some sort, it could legally prevent all groups from burning materials, as that creates a legitimate safety hazard.

The district to which you refer has a very bad attorney who has given very bad advice- or else the district did what they wanted in spite of their counsel's opposition. Wonder which it is? Or is this some national phenom?

4. Actually, I believe they can...
Edited on Wed Jun-28-06 04:55 PM by Solon
Don't know about the exact legalities, but if students want to form a KKK group that doesn't advocate violence as a club in school, I don't think there is a legal way to prohibit it. Granted, I doubt it would be popular in many schools. Also, I don't think they could burn crosses within the school, or even on school grounds, for safety reasons, but that would probably be the only prohibition.

13. It has nothing to do with religion per se...
But everything to do with equal access. If a group of students can meet the standards for forming a student club at school, they cannot legally be hindered from forming said club UNLESS ALL CLUBS ARE BANNED. It doesn't really matter what the CONTENT or theme of the club is, as long as they meet the standard requirements. This means both secular clubs, like the Chess club, Young Democrats, Young Republicans, etc. and other clubs, such as Bible study and Wiccan clubs can also be formed, even Atheist and philosphy clubs are formed, I should know, I was a proud member of the Philosophy club at my high school, and helped start a VIDEO GAME club back in middle school, we actually had to fight the school board for that club, and we won too, good thing we didn't need to resort to going to court over it.

19. Unless he is a student at said school, no he doesn't...
I think this conversation just went right over your head, just because a club could be offensive doesn't mean it should be banned in an of itself. Remember, the Gay-Straight Alliance has been fighting an uphill battle everytime some students at high schools around the country try to form clubs based on them. Same for many other clubs, also, I don't CARE what the theme or content is of said clubs, religious, non-religious, political, or otherwise, you cannot treat them differently from each other LEGALLY. Its called EQUAL ACCESS.

37. So why use such an extreme example?
The first flaw in your OP is the fact that you were talking about a specific act, one that WOULD be prohibited, not because of the beliefs of the group in question, but because of safety issues. For example, such an act would REQUIRE that faculty or at least an adult be present, even if done, let's say, outside or in the science lab, just to prevent any fire from going out of control. Other than that specific act, as long as the club in question doesn't advocate violence at school, they can do what they wish.

then its legal, its called the right to association. I'm not advocating that its MORAL or RIGHT, just that its legal. Besides, we don't really have to isolate it to just the KKK, David Duke's bullshit-named NAAEP, could also have student members form such clubs.

47. Such a law would be unconstitutional, but it wouldn't surprise me...
if they tried. As I said before, equal access is all that matters as long as you follow the rules, you can form any type of club you like. I helped form a Video Game club in Middle school, and the faculty at first didn't like that, till I wrote a rather eloquent, for a 7th grader, synopsis for the group, to combat ignorance about video game that leads to adults trying to ban them(this was during the Mortal Kombat craze back in 1992-3). Some teachers were actually impressed with this, the club had to meet a standard for CONSTRUCTIVE activities, and they thought this met the standard. I was pretty proud of that myself. :)

83. But you haven't told me what to believe yet.
We need believers to tell us what we think, remember?

48. Why not something to go with your Cthulu Kitty?
Edited on Wed Jun-28-06 05:53 PM by Beacho
Who Will Be Eaten First?

Print them to 'evangelize' the Word of the Unspeakble One

Then set up a local chapter of Campus Crusade For Cthulu

You can also give out "It FOund Me!" bumper stickers

55. I think you can print out the tract.
It's a great parody of classic Chick Tracts

Please, enlighten me.

Show me where I made such a blanket assumption.

68. It appears that way thusly:
Not liking religious clubs and such at school, then asking why your kids can't burn crosses at schools.

So maybe I am not getting what you are trying to say - and maybe that is because you made no real effort to spell out what you are trying to say in the OP...

73. I'll give you a hint, its a non-issue that people are making a MOUNTAIN...
out of. Religious clubs are perfectly legal, and so is this hypothetical club(technically). Just backing up BMUS on this.

Or given me the benefit of the doubt since we've already agreed about the whole respect the believer thing.

65. Give it time...it's coming
along with a great deal of horror over the next 5-50 years (the high number is exceedingly optimistic, I know, but still possible.

And just let things get VERY economically bad (which seems close to certain within 2-20 years) and we will see the festering blackness of soul that Amerika's Busheviks are harboring, now masked, by and large with the occasional Coulterish exception.

Their fantasies will ultimately become reality. It always happens this way, according to history, and only a handful of very rare, special occasionas did it not. The "reign of demons" Jefferson spoke about the Adams administration, for one, which did indeed end but only because liberty had just been born here and it was not fated to die so young at the hands of these early Busheviks.

After the Civil War was another. Again, young idealistic nation (yes yes I know very well the atrocities that our nation performed, so have all of them and many far worse than we, though it doesn't make any of it right) and a defined period until victory in which civil liberties were suspended...and then restored.

Ours will NEVER be restored unless the Ruling Junta is deposed (I'd say at the ballot box, but heh, that's pretty funny in a tragic "gee there's six hour lines for toilet paper" hangman's fatalistic humor.."at the ballot box" yeah right).

And the War on Terror (actually it is a war against the American People) will NEVER end, unless the Ruling Junta is deposed.

And oh my yes, eventually those poor persecuted Evangelical Christians (not all of them, just the NeoConfederate subgroup) will reclaim those "rights" that the terrible liberals took away.

Like the right to disenfranchise African-Americans by the millions (I now am forced to wonder, did that EVER go away, even for the briefest time?).

84. Something else to show at your club
We'll see how 'respectful' these believers are when they catch a load of this

Richard Dawkins' The Root Of All Evil?

This is an unabashed critique of religion and in Dawkins opnion why it is so dangerous.

86. Uh oh!
We've been beaten up over that more than once here.

The Brits don't have the same "shhhh! Don't upset the believers!" attitude that is so prevalent here.

Critiques like that are perfectly acceptable in the UK.

If that was broadcast on American msm, Home Depot would run out of pitchforks and torches within the hour.

87. Screw that
If people want to put their beliefs in the public square and use it to form policy than I, or anyone else, have a right to critique that belief system.

If you can't stand the heat....

89. Just remember who decides what our rights are.
On DU you could post it in the R&T forum and hope it doesn't get locked.

But where I live, smart atheists stay in the closet.
