5. It started as "Family Values"...
...and it was used successfully by Bush Sr, I believe. The lemmings bought into it.

Anyone watch "Murphy Brown" back in the day? They did an excellent show on the whole "Family Values" bs, and how silly it was that the Republicans were acting as if they had cornered the markets on morals.

Dan Quayle attempted to ride on the success of "Republicans are the party of morals" propaganda, but then again--he has the brain of a kumquat.

6. It was all an elaborate ruse
Everybody has moral values. However the Rethugs redefined and twisted things so that "moral values" came to be associated in peoples' minds (via repetition) with heterosexuality, nuclear families, sexual purity, Christianity and so on. Then they made the claim that the Republicans were the party of moral values while the Democrats were not because the Democrats support gay rights and freedom of choice for women, have fewer strongly religious people, etc. However the Democratic party is very much the party of moral values--values like caring for the needy, freedom of religion, freedom of choice for women, health care for everyone, living wages for all, etc.
