I was in college in the 60's and 70's and saw it a few times.

5. flag burning
Edited on Thu Jun-29-06 08:20 PM by spag68
Maybe I've lost my memory with age, but I do remember any number of t-shirts bandanas and certainly fireworks with flags on them. Flag burning is preferred to suicide bombs.

7. No One Has Burned the Flag in Years
It used to happen in the '60s & '70s, but I don't think I have seen it since. If they had passed the anti flag-burning thing, the flag-burning would have come back. If you tell someone that they can't do something, it makes them want to do it.

10. It happened in Amherst Mass. a few years ago.
The beer-belly brigadiers on all of the politics forums screamed about it for months.

16. I have to vehemently disagree with you
flag burning crimes went up 33% this year. This is an epidemic. The total amount of flagburning crimes went up from 3 incidents to 4 incidents. They have got to call out the National Guard to hunt down all 4 of these people and send them to Gitmo......Oh wait, all our Guardsmen are in other countries hunting down brown people. :sarcasm:

Pretty sure it was an American Flag. I was probably pretty drunk at the time.

13. Nope. And I'm 57 and was around protests in the 60's
I never actually saw anyone burn their draft card either. Only saw it on the news, never in person. Today I wonder if the people doing it (that were filmed for the news) were Nixon operatives sent in to stir up hatred toward the anti-war groups.

14. This is exactly what I've always assumed --
agents provocateur from the government -- the hippies and anti-war people I knew were so emotionally distant from the flag it would never have occurred to one of them to burn it -- if you look at early films of flag burnings, the people don't look right. Never could put my finger on it, but they look too well-fed, and I remember one flag burning TV spot where the guys were wearing boots, not sandals -- I think the flag-burnings were made-for-TV psy-ops on the American people.

18. I saw one burned several years ago at an anti-GMO protest
Edited on Thu Jun-29-06 09:25 PM by Webster Green
It was in Sacramento, CA.

A former community garden in a vacant property had been shut down by the city, but liberated (and re-planted) that day by anti GMO protesters.

I have a pic that I took of the burning flag somewhere, but it would take me a while to track it down.

23. You don't have to outlaw it - just make the max penalty for shooting
a flag burner a $5 fine, $2 if you bayonet the burner.

Seriously, this is self-policing conduct. If you burn it in the middle of Berkeley, you're probably safe and may get a higher grade. Try that on a US Marine Base, and your stupidity will be recognized in a very physical way.
