SO THIS REPUBLICAN COMES INTO MY WORK
and I have this "impeach bush" bumper sticker on my laptop. He's all like "how come you want to impeach Bush?" and I was like "well first, he lied us into war, second, he stole TWO elections, and third, he spies on all of us!" This republican was all like "Bush doesn't spy on us." Then I loaded up Mozilla Firefox and pointed out the stories that Bush looks into our phone records, has violated VISA, and the whole SWIFT banking thing. She was so shocked. She was like "well he's all about small government." I then showed her how Bush has increased spending since Clinton left office, and she couldn't respond!

Then, this local gang asked me to join because of my bow-staff and nunchuck skills.

This isn't any less believable than some of the stories I've seen on here recently concerning "take downs" of Republicans...

13. Hmmm... I see the stories all the time......My small true story...
Edited on Fri Jun-30-06 03:34 AM by LaPera
I find it ridiculous those that do make up stories...I hate fucking republicans (and moderates) I have since I was about seventeen...They truly know better than to approach me...I'll bite their fucking heads off...so I really don't know any here in liberal Humboldt Co. (N CA and I'm originally from SF).

I'm an electrical contractor and I was getting gas at Costco a couple of days ago and I have this sticker on my black Toyota 4x4 pick up "Electricians Against Bush" on the back on my window...and across from me getting gas was this well dressed, retired contractor looking dude, well groomed, silver-haired big dude (as I am) with the biggest brand new Dodge huge pick up as you've ever seen, he was also getting gas and he couldn't take his eyes off me...He saw my sticker and just couldn't figure me out, a guy like me, a white Italian dude, electrician, who looks & dresses well & cool and is against Bush...How could this be? He must figure only people who didn't work, or minorities, "hippies" or perhaps women or who know who else are the only ones against Bush...I could tell he wanted to ask me something...But I just looked at him very firmly, no smile and I eye balled him until he turned away...then I drove off, and he was staring at my truck again as I drove off, as he was still filling up his monster gas tank...I know I'm unapproachable, but I hate the fuckers...and it shows...although there are times I'd like to converse and pick their brains and find out why they are such ignorant, selfish, racist, lying cocksuckers...So no big made up story, nothing more,I didn't change his way of thinking or anything like that...Personally, I just never talk or know any republicans, but I sure as fuck wouldn't make up any stories if I did!!

I don't know if they are or aren't, but I give the posters the benefit of the doubt, and figure in a 10-20% error rate for hyperbole. I certainly don't go running around calling them liars and dishonest... and I'm a Socialist, too.

5. they seem implausible to anyone with common sense
any story that involves anyone saying "clinton's penis" which many of them do is clearly bullshit. i've never once, ever, in any discussion with my republican friends ever heard them mention his genitals or his adultery, instead they resort to making shit up about how he gutted the military and loathed our armed forces.

do you know a single die-hard bush supporter who walks away from an argument about politics like a struck dog? no, they simply argue their indefensible position even more with almost as illogical reasoning as the stories afterwards are unbelievable.

i know story telling is part of the american story, most children don't know that george washington was a lousy general, or that abraham lincoln was not a good public speaker, but to go on a message board, flat out make shit up about your day, and then somehow feel good about yourself afterwards is idiotic and needs to be confronted.

11. Everyone in my
entire crazy family uses "Clinton's penis" as a reason to hate him. They're fundamentalist Christians and they heard Clinton condemned from the pulpit for the heinous crime of getting a BJ in the Oval Office so that's all that matters to them. Everything else pales in comparison.

They're die-hard Bush supporters but won't argue with me about politics because (a) my dad and I love each other very much and decided to put political arguments aside for the sake of our relationship and (b) I can make anyone in my family look foolish when we talk politics so no one wants to get into discussions with me anymore.

And no, I'm not making this up.

I think it's the kind offer of a ride to the military recruiter's office that gets Bush-supporters down. I mean to say, Jesus says we should return hatred with kindness, and what is kinder than offering someone a ride to where they seem to want to go so badly? You just can't make some folks happy, I guess.

Don't sweat the small stuff, RDUSocialist. I choose not to read the boasting threads, but when a DU vet mentions an encounter like that I find it believable enough. A quiet offer like that is better than a "smackdown" any day, imo.

Hey Swampy! You're up late (or early, I should say) - it's only 9:38 a.m. on my side of the pond. Why aren't you asleep?!

How's life in NOLA now?

Back on topic, yeah, the fundie Republicans I know are still harping on the Clenis. It's that obsession with sex that they have.

Here's a little personal anecdote:

I was visiting my family in Georgia in the summer of 2004 and one day went out horseback riding with my favorite cousin. The talk eventually turned to politics and I was surprised to discover that my cousin had become very politically active - until that time I don't think she had ever even voted in her life. She was parroting all the talking points gleaned from her pastor (and at that time, because of all the years I've been in the UK, I was completely unaware of how political fundamentalist churches had become) and she went on and on about Bill and Monica and how immoral he was ("just like a dog in heat"). Then, out of the blue, my cousin casually mentioned that she hadn't had sex since 1987.

See what I'm getting at? Fundies are obsessed with sex, especially if they aren't getting any. They hate the Big Dog because they feel he gets way too much! And he's happy! Fundies don't like that.

41. So I was talking to my freeper neighbor about the high price of gas...
Edited on Fri Jun-30-06 02:40 PM by Javaman
I was out on my front lawn the other day watering my grass and my freeper neighbor, Phil, comes by to shoot the breeze. Phil is a good guy but from time to time he feels he must keep his republican points up to date or has to bow to the almighty and strike down a Democrat or two just for good measure.

So there I was minding my own business and out trots Phil, "howdy, neighbor" he shouts an proceeds to engage me in a little verbal fencing.

Phil says, that he just filled up his tank for his monstrous SUV at the local station and it cost him a bundle. Sorry let me rephrase that, "A BUNDLE!". So I said, "Phil, please enlighten me on what a bundle, actually is?"

Phil, taken aback by my blunt inquiry into his personal finances, stammered out that he would rather not say, thank you very much. So I hazarded a guess, "let me see. Phil. You have a large ass SUV (I try to sneak in as many expletives as possible to drive him nuts) that uses a shit load of gas, so you must have a fucking huge gas tank. I'm thinking, oh, 25 gallons to be conservative (winked at him. I love doing that because he's such a homophone, he doesn't know whether I'm being a wise ass or that I'm coming on to him) and I would say that your the type to only use premium for your fuel, that would make it oh 3.25? Sound good, so doing a little math here, I say you paid in the area of about 80 bucks!!"

Phil scowled at me, in that holier than thow fashion and yelled at me, "Penis!!"

"come again, Phil?" I said quizzically.

Phil, "you heard me, Penis!!!"

Not knowing what to think of Phil's sudden sexual outburst, I didn't quite know how to respond. "Well, Phil, I have one but I'm not about to share it with you".

Overly repressed, Phil, exploded at this point, "Penis!!! Clinton's Penis!!!"

"ahhh, I see, you are angry over the high gas prices because of Clinton's penis", normally, my irrational fundie neighbor takes a while before he brings out the penis ammo, but I'm thinking that he must be really angry about something.

"So, Phil, you rather misplaced anger at how our current administration lied to you after moron* said he* was going to jaw-bone his saudi friends into lowering the gas prices during the 2000 election finally caught up with you and because your brain is set on broil, you can only blame Clinton penis? Is that correct?"

"Blue Dress stains!!!, Clinton's Penis!!!" phil foamed.

"Well, Phil, until you get a grip and get that penis out of your mouth, I will continue to ride the bus and take my bike to work while you spend away your child's college fund on your fuel", I retorted.

Phil, apoplectic at this point, screamed at the sky and stormed off.

So what is the moral for this totally fictional account, as things get worse in our society, as our rights are drained away, be prepared for the right wing fundie arguments to settle down to their lowest common denominator, sex, how they don't get any and are jealous that Democrats do. We, on the other hand, will have a firm grip on the issues the fundies, other hand, will have a firm grip on Clinton's penis. :)

Conversion is rarely a slap up side the head in one conversation thing ..it is a series of breaks...slow leaks of light that get through.....but during the process...now and then you can tell ..you just made another crack in the wall.

30. Actually, one of the FIRST things that come up is Clinton's penis!
The Republican I talked to a couple of weeks ago (and, I might add, "turned") brought up, first thing, Clinton doing Monica in the Oval office. I, in turn, brought up Bush's lie to get us into a war. We went on and on. This guy was completely uninformed, as many people who vote Republican are.

And, no, we're not going to turn around the die-hard Republicans. These people are a waste of our breath. But there are many, MANY Americans who voted for Bush and who are buying into the Republican wedge issues of immigration, gay marriage, and abortion who, once informed, are able to put aside those issues as the wedges that they are, and focus on other issues, such as how the economic policies of this government are turning their pockets inside out, and the war in Iraq is making us less safe. These are the people that need to be targeted. They are not die-hard Republicans. They are Americans who have been mystified by the bullshit coming from this administration. And, once informed, most of them vote Democrat.

We should all be out there, informing our fellow Americans.

39. Take a look over at freeperville sometime
No matter WHAT the topic is, someone mentions "clinton's penis". NSA spying = Clinton's penis; lied into war = Clinton's penis. It's the cause of ALL our problems, and some of them even have it as their tagline or whatever it is.

I believe a lot of republicans have no idea what's really going on, and if they have a brain in their head, and are presented with facts, it's quite possible they might reconsider their party affiliation. The blind followers will never be convinced, but a lot of true republicans are not bush republicans. There's a difference between repukes and bush repukes - the blind followers will never be convinced. Others, presented with facts, might be.

I too would like proof of a false story.

Look, I'm sure that some of those stories are made up, some are embellished, some leave out the less-pleasant details, and some are 100% true. So what?

If someone wants to post a little story to pep others up a bit, why not? They are not spreading lies about historical or scientific fact, or political positions or politicians' personal lives.

Seriously, who cares?

BTW, I've had arguments at my work with a libertarian-leaning right-winger and left him speechless because he was so damn wrong - and other times it ended in a draw. It's not my habit to tell those anecdotes here, but so what if someone does?

20. My experience has been that you can't convince Conservatives that
they have been wrong to support Bush. You have to let them come to that realization on their own. It comes sooner for some of them than others. All you can really do is make sure they know about the shit Bush and his administration and the GOP is pulling. Then make sure they understand how it impacts them, their children, their grandchildren, etc. Except for the Kool Aid addicts, who will never change, the realization that something just isn't right with Bush comes eventually.

38. Exactly.
Most of us could give examples of Repubs who are beginning to question. I could tell the story of two very fundamentalist Christian Repubs who, after much discussion, voted Democratic for the first time in their lives in 2004, but the OP would just say that he doesn't believe me. I could say that perhaps I know a better quality of Repub, but I don't think that is the difference between us.

What is the point of this silly attempt to divide the DU community? In the last few months there seems to be a lot more intentionally mean spirited posts the purpose of which can only be guessed at. But I'm tired of them.

It would be inappropriate to question the OP's motives here, but perhaps he should take a look in the mirror before questioning the motives of other DUers.

If you said that you singlehandedly enlightened them with a several minute lecture, all their illusions were shattered, and they became instant Democrats, then he/she wouldn't believe you.

The post declares skepticism about those that make it sound easy.

28. That's a bunch of bullshit and you know it.
I've, personally, turned a Republican around. Let me tell you something: most Republicans are nothing more than misinformed, or uninformed citizens. They watch Fox News and they buy into the bullshit. It doesn't take a lot of work--just giving them the facts--to get them informed and turn them around. If most of the people in this country were truly informed of the facts, most of the people in this country would be Democrats.

All we're doing is informing people. And informed people become Democrats.

31. AAAA fricking MEN! It really IS the media, stupid!
not you.

I was on Wisconsin public radio the other day, arguing with a guy, Allan Towne (sp?) from Washington Monthly, who was promoting a book he'd just written, and, among other things I said was that the media is MORE culpable than the lying, stealing, cheating republicans who've taken away our democracy. He said they'd been getting tougher on Bush lately, but I said that was a bunch of garbage: they're STILL knuckling under at every opportunity, especially the WH Prese CorpsE. I asked him why they allowed B* to NEVER answer any difficult questions (rare as they are), simply by having a string of reporters ask the same question til he answered it; I talked about Judith Miller, The Times, the Post, the runup to the war, and how they uncritically transcribed EVERY LIE the WH told, right up til the invasion.

he wasn't too pleased

that's what we're up against...even so-called progressives (this guy is a freaking Poli Sci proFESSor!) don't get it

what hope is there

Republicans don't seem to be paying attention, obviously. We need to point out things to them.

Oh, and love your Napoleon Dynamite reference.:D

Tammy

PS--Oh, it was a *spoof*! But I don't think all those stories were false.

44. we could kill them on the gov spending thing alone
most conservatives are COMPLETELY CLUELESS ABOUT THE HUGE JUMP in government spending.

We need to run that in an ad over and over, it'll suppress GOP turnout for sure

*disclaimer: I don't actually know tiger style kung fu. But I've seen a lot of movies that involve jumping impossible distances and using weird kung fu styles.

51. I think someone said the other day that the trillions of dollars of
borowings by Bushco already actually substantially exceeded the total amount of government borrowings since George Washington. that's worth repeating. I just wish I had the two totals to hand.

and yesterday she pooped on a freeper. And then she spat up on a neo-con.
