Okay lefties, all together now! One, two, three, STAB!
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/28/nyregion/28hillary.html?pagewanted=all

The frustration on the left toward Mrs. Clinton, the junior senator from New York, has been building for months, particularly as opinion has turned against the war and some Democrats in Congress have begun to pressure President Bush to begin a withdrawal of American troops.

Recently, the anger erupted into public view, with antiwar activists publicly protesting against the senator and, perhaps more significantly, an antiwar candidate emerging to challenge her in the Democratic primary next year.

<snip>Political analysts say Mrs. Clinton's standing within the party gives her greater room to maneuver politically.

"She has the left in her back pocket," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac institute. "She doesn't have to worry about catering to them. She has to worry about attracting centrist Democrats, the mainstream of the party."

And I suspect that she and her analysts are miscalculating.

but the last election showed the power of the least worst option - the left flocked to Kerry though he advocated the same Iraq policy as Bush.

Triangulation will work as long as there is no left alternative to the democrats.

...so there is NO progressive media whatsoever. The 1996 Telecommunications Act played a big part in establishing the BushCo propaganda machine we see in operation today.

Or....maybe he could convince Hillary to screw the clamps a little tighter on those "welfare queens" who drive around in fancy cars on our dime.

He should have fucking inhaled.

Hillary's seen as a forgone conclusion for re-election.

even really progressive people don't see challenging her as worth the futile effort.
this is when i'd rather be an idealistic greenparty/nader supporter...... :(

but she does do some good things in Congress and as president, she will be much better than what we have now.........

At the vigil in front of her office for the 2000th soldier i could really feel how important it is to replace her as my rep in WDC. I have no hope that this is possible...

BUT what i HATE about Hill is her total supplication before the M-I-C. IF she were president, i do think the energy in the country would be different. We would in fact be a different and better nation.

54. Apparently, even in droves, we don't carry enough weight
To make HRC worry about being renominated in 2006. And from what little I know about NY politics, it looks like she doesn't have a lot to fear from the GOP there either.

I really don't want to see defeating Clinton in 2006 become some sort of crusade for the antiwar left. For one, I think it's a battle we will lose, and in losing it we will strengthen the prowar part of the party. I would much rather see us spend our time, and especially money, in knocking off repubs and regaining control of the Senate and HoReps.

If New Yorkers want to contribute to Hillary's primary challenger, fine. But any dollar that comes from out of state is a dollar that could have been better spent somewhere else.

49. Unacceptable or not, it's still not support for Iraq occupation
and no one said it was the "same as Murtha's"

But, on the other hand, it's an improvement over Bush and Hillary.

It's one thing to say that his plan for withdrawl is unacceptable, still another to say that he has no plan for withdrawl, which would be someone who supports Iraq occupation.

Hence, he can not be lumped in with Hillary and Lieberman and other pro-war Dems.

He fits in better with Feingold and Murtha, with Mutha's plan being the fastest of the three.

I was quite pleased to see Kerry share company with Murtha and Dean on a RW cartoon. An honorable trio. So often he shares company with Lieberman, and that's just weird.

But anyway...

77. uh...are you living on Mars? Europe maybe? Cuz you're getting the same
everyone is getting (unless you are BFEE and then you get to screw everyone).
What you fail to grasp is that any talk of candidates, shades this way of Atila the Hun is IRRELEVANT.
We're all done for my friend, you don't get any priviledges for being "centrist" or whatever it is you call yourself. In the words of Eric Idle:

And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space
Because there' bugger all down here on earth.

Sorry to disappoint you, but with the BFEE you don't get any points for not being a lefty. Bend all you want, it's the same for all.

46. "She has the left in her back pocket,"
Edited on Thu Dec-29-05 09:14 PM by Wizard777
Good! Then she will have no problems understanding why we will be on her ass about getting on Bush's ass. She put us there.
When you take away the torture, the civillian casualties, Halliburton price gouging, KBR's double billing, and all the other bad things that happened in Iraq. What your left with is a war crime. I would hate to think of Hillary as another one of those Armchair Schindlers.

47. I, for one, am NOT in Hillary Clinton's back pocket
and could easily be convinced to vote third party against her.

She has to EARN my vote, and her stance on the war makes it highly unlikely she deserves it.

50. Glad to be the 5th Rec. This is a great topic.
Let's see, how about this equation:

Hillary popularity (-) Name recognition = Base support.

Her percentages for the nomination range between 26% (Zogby) to 43% (CNN). That's quite a spread.

Lets peg it at 36% minus name recognition, with much of that soft support.

So, what's the big deal. She's doing the four corners defense, a stall, as though she can run out the clock and take the prize.

Here's the big factor: Iraq. It's is and will be a mess. About the time the Muslim fundies tell us to get the hell out OR the press actually is forced into coverage, anyone who voted for the authority bill will look like a complete tool. Then it's time for Hillary to pay her dues.

She doesn't have the left in her pocket. I'd seriously think of voting for someone else if she gets th nomination. I wouldn't (unless they were very viable) but I'd think about it. I wouldn't work for her or give money, on that I'm sure.

So much for this leftie.

Rumors of her nomination are greatly exaggerated.

53. I will not vote for a pro-war candidate next time.
I don't care who it is. All anti-war Democrats should let the party know that they CAN NOT count on our votes.

55. Aren't most of Hillary's supporters centrists/moderates?
Is it not the progressives who think Hillary is leaning to much toward the Right?

Seems Hillary hasn't looked at the grass in a long time. If she would have she'd know something is up with the roots.

62. not to mention the freepers going like
"oh please, anything but Hillary"

i for one would not be surprised if Hillary turns out to be the candidate, with polls showing lack of popular support, but gets elected anyway.

64. Well that was a blast of surreality
"Left in her back pocket"?! Give me what they're smoking, for I see the left dead set against Hillary, and if she runs in '08, she's going to get her ass handed to her. Too many on the left would either go third party, or sit out this one, because for an ever increasing number of people, getting out of Iraq is priority one.

I think that this is simply wishful thinking on the part of the author, the NY Times, and possibly even Hillary herself. Hopefully though they all wake up soon and smell the discontent. Otherwise reality is going to turn out to be a real bitch.

66. This article contradicts itself.
If "she has the left in her back pocket", then who the hell were all the antiwar activists publically protesting her? Libertarians? Is her primary challenger not "on the left"?

:wtf: This is journalism?

If you want to talk about a DINO, the asswipe challenging her from the left was in the Green Party until about ten minutes before he jumped in....and the demonstrators are the ususal clot of loonies who hate Democrats.

83. Another reason why we don't kick ass in elections.
I find the democrats to be a collection of self-serving, egotistical, whiney, egotistical, voters. We have no problem destroying people within our own party if it suits our particular self-interest. Narrow minded comes to mind. Republicans blow, but you have to give them credit for RALLYING around the people in their own party. Unity.. it's not just a convention theme.

"our particular self-interest" that you speak of?

Personally I am a registered independent because politically I am socialist. I did not vote for Nader in either presidential election.
