Wow. My music phone call really turned some heads on Malloy

Was I wrong? Does most commerical music today have no social conscience? There are exceptions. But, it's not like the late 1960s into the 1970s.

Real protest music died with John Lennon and Harry Chapin.

I am a DJ. You can't believe the shit I have to play when I'm on a job.

on edit: I was Aram from Tucson, AZ.

1. You called him tonight?
I missed it and I usually listen to him. Music today sucks for the most part but there exceptions. I liked Eminem's Mosh. I can't even think of any others right now.

Rage Against the Machine was good back in the 1990s.

5. Yes, Peter was doing Malloy's show
But maybe Malloy was doing Randi's show. It's really confusing lately.

4. That's cool
I came of age in the eighties, horrible time for music, and I was into the Doors, Zepellin, the Stones, Hendrix and Joplin. I was an outcast.

6. My girls both love the Beatles!
Not protest music really -- but kind of a protest against what is being played in their ears all the time (Mariah Carey, arrrgh!) which they happily (to me) think is crap.

8. The classics never die
Mariah Carey was actually very good on her first album. Her background is in gospel music and her first album was very soulful. After that, they commercialized the hell out of her and she sucked.

I think one day, probably once she is old and gray, she will get back to her roots.

10. Wouldn't surprise me
I have her "Butterfly" album and that's really good. Her new stuff isn't too bad, that I've heard anyway which is just the singles. Apparently her new album is the number one bought album of 2005. I have her "Rainbow" cd too and that's not too bad but I don't like her doing hiphop stuff like that one. I like her older style of music like she did in the 80's. It just goes so well with her voice.

17. The eighties were a horrible time for music???
I disagree. There was a lot of great music in the eighties - you had to look for it but it was there. Pixies, REM, Replacements, U2, Minutemen, Dead Kennedys, Sonic Youth...to name a few off the top of my head.

I like the classic rock, too, but there is so much more out there.

11. A Perfect Circle has an album out of nothing but anti-war songs.
I think it's called emotive.

12. Everyone should listen to their version of "Imagine"
It is stunning, and on that album, if I recall. Sort of a contemporary dark side version of Lennon's masterpiece, but I think he would understand it fully and feel it deeply.

14. You can stream it at this link:
http://www.benfrank.net/nuke/Free_Peace_mp3s.html (very near the bottom)

Even better (maybe) you can download a whole lot of contemporary people's music and make your own CDs for them.

16. Try the Drive By Truckers
Their "Putting People on the Moon" is one of the most ferocious, socially aware tunes I've heard in years. It's on their album "The Dirty South."

"Too Much Sex, Too Little Jesus" is an equally scorching look at the Religion Industry.

When the president talks to God
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our women's' rights
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does God suggest an oil hike
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Are the consonants all hard or soft?
Is he resolute all down the line?
Is every issue black or white?
Does what God say ever change his mind
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Does he fake that drawl or merely nod?
Agree which convicts should be killed?
Where prisons should be built and filled?
Which voter fraud must be concealed
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
I wonder which one plays the better cop
We should find some jobs. the ghetto's broke
No, they're lazy, George, I say we don't
Just give 'em more liquor stores and dirty coke
That's what God recommends

When the president talks to God
Do they drink near beer and go play golf
While they pick which countries to invade
Which Muslim souls still can be saved?
I guess god just calls a spade a spade
When the president talks to God

When the president talks to God
Does he ever think that maybe he's not?
That that voice is just inside his head
When he kneels next to the presidential bed
Does he ever smell his own bullshit
When the president talks to God?

I doubt it

I doubt it
