ABMN Amro is NOT screwing me
A little while back I posted this rant about my mortgage company losing a tape of confidential client info, such as social security numbers. I was, in a worded, vexed.

However, I received a letter today informing me that the tape was instead routed incorrectly due to an internal glitch involving shipping and the package's return address.

Therefore I withdraw my complain against ABN Amro and hope that others who hold a mortgage through them are given some peace by this good news.

Still waiting on getting the second. How long ago did you receive the good news?

My wife told me over the phone about 10 minutes before I posted.

2. It's good that you believe their explanation.
Still . . . keep a watch on your credit for any signs of ID theft.

4. Absolutely! That's good advice for everyone
But if a future identity theft can be traced back to this "missing/not-missing" tape, then presumably ABN Amro is on the hook for it, since they give assurances in writing that the tape was not lost.

3. I got the first letter, found out about the "glitch" on their web site
No second letter yet.

But when I went to sign up for the credit monitoring service using the code provided in the letter, it returned an "invalid code" error. Have they withdrawn the offer?

UPDATE: 12-19-2005 Mortgage Tape Found

The computer tape presumed lost has been located and was returned to our data processing center in Chicago by DHL on Monday December 19.

Even though the tape was returned, we continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the time elapsed until recovery of the tape with DHL. We also continue to screen and have seen no signs of misuse of the information.

It is always a good practice for consumers to monitor their credit activity on a regular basis. We continue to encourage customers who received written notification of the incident to enroll in the free credit monitoring service we have arranged. Based on customer feedback, this free service has been extended with TransUnion to one year.

To enroll in the credit monitoring service, please refer to your customer letter.

If you do not have information on how to enroll in the free credit monitoring service or have other questions, please call your customer service contact (see number below) and one of our representatives will be happy to assist you.

We understand the concern that this incident may have caused and we deeply regret that it occurred.

8. so ... ... two wrongs DO make a right?
lemme get this straight: they screwed up by sending a tape out, but thank goodness, screwed up a second time by getting an address wrong, so the tape was returned to sender?

wow, does that ever instill confidence!

9. Well
As I understand it, there was one screw-up yielding two successive assessments. The first assessment--that the tape was lost--was correct based on the information available at the time. The second assessment--that the tape was mislabeled internally--was correct based on new information and replaced the first assessment.

Am I just reading it wrong?

i was assuming that the tape shouldn't have been sent out at all, but i suppose it's possible that it should have been sent somewhere (off-site backup, perhaps) but was mislabelled.

i.e., only one mistake.

so maybe it's not a case of two wrongs making a right; but in any event, three lefts definitely DO make a right.
