The General Discussion forum is going to change over the weekend
Over the weekend, we're going to be opening a new General Discussion forum and moving the old forum to a permanent archive. This will cause the address of General Discussion to change, so if you have it bookmarked/linked you will need to update it with the new address. Your DU bookmarks will not be affected and will continue to work.

Please note that this is for site maintenance only, and that General Discussion will essentially stay exactly the same except for the URL.

Thanks

3. a few questions
1. will searches be able to span the "new" GD and the archived GD with a single search?
2. will GD-Politics be unaffected by this change?
3. what's the status of the previously discussed modifications to the GD and GDP forums where GD was going to require somewhat longer posts and GDP was going to be for "quickies"?

thanks for any info you can provide and thanks for DU !!!

oh, and Happy New Year too ...

9. Can I make a suggestion?
Edited on Sat Dec-31-05 01:31 PM by Gregorian
I see the notes that are displayed on the page when one posts. Something to the effect of checking to see if what you are about to post is already posted.

I'd like to suggest two things:
1) Check the Greatest page also.

2) Demopedia. (Put a note on the post page to suggest people look at the demopedia first.)

Happy new year. May it be significantly better than 2005.

10. Correction
Checking the Greatest page should be a prompt that happens when people nominate a thread. I just see so many multiples on the Greatest page.

Another one of my useless ideas.........

11. I'll throw this out.
It seems that Gregorian has a good suggestion if it's possible. So many threads are duplicated by all of us (me included) finding a hot headline on one of the regular go-to sites such as RawStory.

All then that is posted is the four paragraphs, the link and maybe a short sentence. These duplications of the same headline if possible, restricted to one thread would make sense. It would not clone so many of the same articles and would result in more one-time nominations of the information which would be for the benefit of everybody, including the latecomers.

Finally, by site software electronically reducing the number of duplicate posts nominated, it would also inspire more inventive and creative original posts by more members which would also be to the benefit of everybody.
