The crime committed against him was equally hideous if he were in perfect health! AIDS can effect anyone and I think the Shepard connection links it too much as a "gay disease" whrn it fact it is "everyone's disease" JMHO.

The girl who wrote this felt it was significant. I don't view it in quite the same as you, but I do understand your point.

was a victim of both this awful disease and a hate crime.I respect her point but even as one clicks on the candle stories one see the variety of folks affected by HIV. My best friend ,who was bisexual, died of this vicious disease, and was to afraid to let me know he had contacted it because he thought I would think he was "stupid" because I used to caution him to be "careful" and he wasn't. I used to pray every day that somehow he wouldn't get HIV. That was when I used to pray. I miss him every single day.He was the most brilliant, talented person I have ever known and he can never be replaced.I also lost one of the best actors in my theater company and his lover to this disease.I always think of all those lost on this day and always light a candle for a cure.

I lost two friends and a cousin. It's so tragic and my gut tells me it doesn't have to be like this and that a cure could have been found a long time ago. I don't know, I might be wrong, but when the government was so slow in taking action it pissed me off because I thought of how many lives might have been saved if they had stepped in sooner.

I've been thinking of those I knew who died all day today. :(
