How can we prove someone is a veteran?
We're offering $1.00 admission to see "Flags of Our Fathers" at my theater on Pearl Harbor Day.

My only question is, how can we prove that someone is a veteran? Is it safer, just for the one day, to take their word for it? Or is there a way to identify them?

1. I would take their word for it..
(even though most could probably produce their seperation papers, given time)

2. Ask for their DD214...
If they don't know what it is, they're probably not a vet, IMO. I've never met a vet who didn't know what one was whether they still had theirs or not.

Best to take their word for it.
Anyone brings any "proof", thank them for bringing it.

3. Ask to see their ID Card, or their DD-214...
...the DD-214 is what you get when you separate from service and it's the most important document you could have.

4. If it was me ...
I'd be yakking to the old soldiers for so long they'd miss the movie. So my advice is just take their word for it, it would save a lot of time.

5. We went to Golden Corral a few times on Veteran's Day...
and they never asked for proof. Just say you're a vet and right in you go. I do hate the idea of non-vets taking advantage, though.

If someone gets in at the cheaper price it's not a big deal. It's only one day. Mark up the popcorn even more if it really worries you!

9. DD Form 214
If they whine they don't have it, that's their fault. They were issued one and copies are available thru the National Personnel Records Center. Every veteran should have a copy. Neither VA nor any other gov't agency will give you the time of day without one. Further, next of kin should have a copy for death and medical bennies.

If they are retirees, they should have a retiree's id card.

10. VA will help get it for you...
Hubby lost his in a move. When he went to the VA hospital for medial care he didn't have his and they made sure he got a new one. A lot of vets don't have them. My stepdad lost his a few years after he was discharged. Still didn't need it when he got sick and went to the VA.

You are right, though. It's much better for all vets to have them.

14. That's true; VA does maintain copies, but its bureaucracy
would make spiders dizzy. I had to get another copy (they do seem to disappear during moves) and NPRC sent mine o/a 2 weeks.

17. Hi sarge
Your Congressperson's office is another good way to go about getting a new copy. I know because I've had to order mine up about six or eight times now. Organization is not my strong suit.
John
But at least I'm on a first-name basis with a lot of congressional staffers, so there is that.

21. Unless you're going to demand ID, cross-checked with a DD-214...
...I don't believe that you can. However, DD-214s tend to be carfully guarded by their owners, so you may be satisfied that a moviegoer flashes soemthing that looks legitimate.

You'll severely slow down the ticketing process.

22. Ask 'em their service number
They'll either refuse because it's the same now as their S.S. number or rattle off, USN 516 12 XX, AF 17 605 8XX which were mine from back when, or RA XXXXXXX or US XXXXXXX. I doubt that many do not remember.

Better to let a few sneaky bastards get through than to insult a few real veterans who didn't bother bringing a stack of documentation to the movies.
