Poll Suggests Obama, Edwards Have Best Combo Of Name Recognition, Favorability Ratings
Click here to read the whole analysis.

<snip>

Obama had a net favorability rating of +17, best among any prospective candidate. Among those surveyed, 75 percent had an opinion of Obama (46 percent favorable, 29 percent unfavorable). Should Obama run -- he hasn't yet decided -- the trick will be continuing to have a large net favorability rating, even as more voters become familiar with his policies.

Edwards has a +10 net favorability rating. Among those surveyed, 86 percent had an opinion of Edwards (48 percent favorable, 38 percent unfavorable). In other words, Edwards has excellent name recognition, and room to improve his favorable ratings.

Hillary Clinton (+5) and Al Gore (-1) fared worse.

1. It's a fun game to play, I guess, but WAY too early to be guaging
top winnersandwhat will be in politics TWO YEARS from now!

I remember Howard Dean, and how for many many months, all the media wonks and much of the general public was saying "How can he lose?" then there was George Alan, who many thought was going to be one of the top Pub candidates for 08.

Although I agrue with the mediaon almost everything, they areRIGHT on one thing. Even two weeks in politics is a lifetime!

3. absolutely, but ...
but this is the point when candidates begin to form exploratory committees, raise money, find staff, etc. so it's good to know who has a leg up, and who has an uphill climb.

2. Republicans will line up
to vote in Dem primaries to get the chance to nominate Hillary.
Why? Because Hillary is the best chance they have to energize their base of old racist, sexist, progress hating Bigots. Don't fall into the trap and nominate hillary. It will be the end of progress as we know it. Just look around and listen to the wing nuts they've already decided Hillary is the nominee. This is because it's their only chance in Hell of a win. IMHO.

5. Two with no negative core
The others either have lost or at one time or other turned off big progressive chunks of the party. It saddens me that Clark seems to create a negative wariness among females for being military while creating sullen resentment among many military cheerleaders for not being staunchly conservative. If only he had won some office in the interim it might have erased this shadowy weight.

On the other hand this is the nonsense of the early season. All these candidates are giants compared to the GOP wannabes, like McCain who got trounced by the GOP in the primaries. Is HE anymore popular or likely to be a NEW McCain? GOP candidates so far are a joke, insult or limbo artists trying to please the insane mastery of the Bush dynasty and the nutty hardcore.

It is interesting how few new additions there are to the favorites circle. There will likely be fewer second tier candidates or wild jumps by the very newly elected. The GOP is floundering with scraps while the Dems put on unjust hold seem to be fielding duly elected executives who were kept from their office, the Clinton past, one new charismatic candidate and a few dodgy centrists gaming the system. Like a victims reunion plus new drafted players. This peculiar warped situation is largely because of the Bush fraud.

6. It saddens me that people think a snake-oil salesman
is "favorable."

Oh - and I'm a female Clark supporter.

I guess I need to go talk to other females and tell them that pretty ain't everything.

(I'll leave out Obama for now. I don't know that much about him).

9. John Edwards is a "snake oil salesman"? Please elaborate
Not being snarky, I really am curious why you think that.

He IS pretty, but that doesn't also necessarily mean that he's an empty suit either.

22. Hey, Clark is a hunk--Especially since he is a Grandfather
Why do you put down your own candidate as much as Edwards in terms of looks?

Both are in great shape and take care of themselves. Let's focus on their ideas, K?

But I think it will improve. Obama strikes me, at this moment, as the guy to beat, assuming he really goes for it. He's got that outsider thing going.

13. This isn't the only poll which indicates that Gore has a net negative rating
I wonder why? You'd think the people would understand the catastrophe that has happened when he didn't become president.

18. yes, but
that doesn't mean people think gore would be a good president.

the republican spin machine did a wonderful job of making gore out to be a serial exaggerator, a tree-hugger and "out of touch with mainstream values."

16. Sadly, that's exactly what your average Joe and Jane are looking for
in Presidential candidates. Can we find two young attractive guys who will take care of the issues that are most important in getting America back on its feet and are willing to surround themselves with an administration that thinks things through before they act? I hate that our society is chosing who will represent them by how they look and walk and talk but if we have to find the pretty boys who have brains and can get the job done, I'll vote for them. I want brains back in the White House and Washington, there's a whole lot of people out there who think W is great to go out drinking with, I wish he'd just go hang out with them now.

19. Amen! The whole Republican party at this time in history is based in adolescence....
Edited on Tue Dec-05-06 04:16 PM by chaska
Every decision is made based not on the wisdom of the common good, but on the aggresive, selfish values of adolescence.

Personally, I think we could do worse than to have a few gray beards (hey, ladies can have beards too. ;) ) running for that office. Our society has abandoned the concept of elders. And it's a big mistake.

21. When are they going to do a poll on "Who do you think is the most competent"?
That would be more important for the country. Bush use to score very highly in the likability polls; translated,"who do you want to have a beer with" polls.
