That is what they want. They want somebody to snap and cause them harm. When it happens, they will get even more attention, and more importantly, they will sue the shirt off of the back of that person.

Ignore them. Its hard, I know. But we have to pretend they don't exist. Don't give them airtime. Don't give them a news spot. Don't counter protest. Just ignore them. I think this is why they went national with their nuttiness. Topeka finally grew tired of their antics and stopped rubbernecking. They took their show on the road to find someone who would stop and stare, and it worked.

We have to stand up to bullies any way we can. These fools get chased away by gay men, too. Michael Moore proved that and so did the two guys here who went into a soul kiss right in front of them when they came here to protest gay friendly policies at the university.

I don't advocate violence, ever, but there are many ways to stand up to bullies and watch them run away.

Ignoring them doesn't work, has never worked, will never work. "Ignore them" is the bad advice we got from our parents when we were in middle school.

These are not your typical "Scut Farkus" type bullies. They are not looking to hurt you. They only crave attention. They are looking to get their ugly mugs and signs on TV, and the only way to do that is to piss you off. Ignoring them in this case is not equivalent to taking a beating at the hands of a thug.

So as long as you continue to gawk and yell and throw stuff, they get what they want - attention.

What would happen if nobody showed up for a counter protest? Noone looked at them as they drove/walked by? It would be just a couple of a-holes standing on the corner. There's no fun in that - you can't spread your message if no one shows to videotape it. They'd be gone in 5 minutes.

If Fred Phelps stands on the corner and no one is there to hear him spout, does he make a sound?

Look I'm not defending the guy. I'd love to see him die a wretched death. But to equate him to a middle school tough guy who will pee his pants and shut up only if everyone corners him and tells him to shut up, is just wrong. Because what he wants is for everyone to corner him and tell him to shut up. Can't get his message out without the confrontation and the press coverage thereof.

They are "being funded" to spread their message and the nightly news is the best free press out there. And "funded" is not really a great description of what is happening - it implies a purposeful source. I'm sure they get some outside funding, but it can't be much. Most of their income is from the church/family members' day jobs.

Warpy, I'm really not interested in continuing this exchange. I've said what I have to say three times now and I'm sure you'll repeat yourself once more as well. So.. Peace. *On a side note, Fred Phelps is indeed one of the worst kind of Farkus bullies. Just not in or to the public. His family has suffered horrible abuse by his hand over the years - literally beaten into submission.

It's not hard to do. A goog pair of pliers can pull the valve plug out of a tire in seconds, leaving it completely and helplessly flat. It's a safe bet they don't have more than one spare tire. You're not really "damaging" anything, since it's a relatively cheap and easy repair at the tire shop to put in new plugs, so you don't have to feel guilty about destroying property, but they wouldn't be going anywhere for a while, until they could pull all the flat tires off the van, haul them to the tire shop, have them fixed, roll them back, and put them back on.

I would never "advocate" such a thing. Especially on a cold, rainy, miserable day. I'm just saying.

ignore them. That we should allow them to intrude on a family at the worst, most painful, most grief-stricken moment of their lives and compound that grief and pain with their little "protest". Because if we ignore them they will go away? Gimme a break. They haven't gone away yet. We tried the old "just ignore them" thing. It didn't work. They have been at this for years. You want to support the troops? Then get out there and expose these charlatins for what they are. They want more attention? Give it to them. These people have no shame, maybe we should give them some. Plus, considering they are doing this at the funerals of US Soldiers, that makes what they are doing a political statement and not a religious one. Take away their tax exempt status, and make these fuckers go out and work for a living.

They get television and print news coverage wherever they show up and post all of the publicity they receive on their repulsive website.

They often brag about events that turned violent and how some of them were, or could have been injured.

Where do you think they get all of the cash to travel the country and protest gay events and soldier funerals?

They are a family of lawyers who constantly sue and win punitive damages.

They know how to work the system.

Right after 9/11, the clan came to protest the "fag-infested" FDNY since it was because of all us sinners that 9/11 was thrust upon us. I had organized protests against them before, and all they do is stand there and yell at you, you yell at them, and nothing really comes out of the experience. I had heard of this new non-confrontational counter-demonstration that had been gaining some attention called "Every Minute Counts". Basically, you get people in he community to pledge "x" amount of dollars for every minute that the Phelps clan in protesting. I was a bartender at the time and decided to use my bully-pulpit for a better good. I ended up raising $1800 for the GLBT firefighters association. Maybe in the future, other people will raise money for the family of the fallen soldier.
