I love "Boston Legal"! Taking on white supremacists tonight.
I'm sure at least some of you are aware of "Prussian Blue" -- the twin sister singing act whose roots lie squarely in the white supremacist movement.

One of the cases featured on tonight's "Boston Legal" involves a twin sister singing act who perform overtly racist songs -- standing up for "White Pride". The twist is, the "bleeding heart liberal" lawyer (the character played by James Spader) is the one tapped to defend them in a custody case.

This may be the most frivolous post I've ever written on DU -- but I absolutely love the writng on Boston Legal. It's so subtly subversive. I watch very little TV, but this show is something special, imho.

8. No spoilers -- but it's just getting BETTER!
Wait 'til you hear Spader's argument in court re: "National Security"! It's absolutely BRILLIANT!

Honestly, it's really rather embarrassing for me to wax enthusiastic about a tv show -- but the more I watch BL, the more I totally LOVE it! Some damn brilliant and politically astute writing...

9. SPOILER ALERT! Don't read this post if you don't want to know what happens!
Okay. Here's what happens. Alan Shore (James Spader) wins the court case for the "White Pride" twins. The deal was, their aunt was suing for custody of the girls on the basis that the twin's parents were exploiting them by home-schooling them and raising them to be racist bigots.

After the court win, the girls break out in song, "Michael Rows the Boat Ashore", to honor Alan Shore. He cuts them off by saying, "You DO know that Michael was a gay Jew from Mexico, don't you?"

20. THANKS! Much appreciate the review.
Maybe someday before it's canceled (as all good shows are) I'll be able to see it again. Hope it lasts long enough to make it to dvd. :)

Thanks!

21. You're very welcome!
As I mentioned in a post below, I'm pretty much a latecomer to BL, so I haven't seen all that many episodes. What I HAVE seen cracks me up and impresses the hell out of me.

It's good fun, however long it lasts. (Impermanence being one of the Laws of the Universe...)

Best wishes,
sw

18. Great minds
I thought the same...couldn't be a coincidence, could it? I mean, (bless her heart) that actress really looks like Coulter. And her demeanor was just as cold and calculating.
Sure it was just a coincidence. (smile).
That's why I love that show.

like that.

"Our President who, by the way, did not invent anything."

And how most members of Congress did not bother to read the complete Patriot Act but were clamoring to sign it into law.

Nothing frivolous about posting BL notes. We have been doing this for quite sometime and last year we posted and posted and emailed Alan Shore's summary about his client who was dragged to court because she had a post-it note on her tax return telling the government to stick it.

On edit:

16. In case you're interested, here's a story about the "real girls" -- Prussian Blue
Young Singers Spread Racist Hate

Oct. 20, 2005 — Thirteen-year-old twins Lamb and Lynx Gaede have one album out, another on the way, a music video, and lots of fans.

They may remind you of another famous pair of singers, the Olsen Twins, and the girls say they like that. But unlike the Olsens, who built a media empire on their fun-loving, squeaky-clean image, Lamb and Lynx are cultivating a much darker personna. They are white nationalists and use their talents to preach a message of hate.

Known as "Prussian Blue" — a nod to their German heritage and bright blue eyes — the girls from Bakersfield, Calif., have been performing songs about white nationalism before all-white crowds since they were nine.

"We're proud of being white, we want to keep being white," said Lynx. "We want our people to stay white … we don't want to just be, you know, a big muddle. We just want to preserve our race."

(more at link)

I came late to BL fandom -- for the longest time I didn't even know it existed (I don't watch much TV beyond news) and then I was always forgetting when it was on. I finally started being a regular viewer near the end of last season. Now I intend to catch it as often as possible.

Brilliant writing and wonderful characters -- it's a real treasure!

17. I break my own boycott of ABC for this show
not much of an activist, but I do love this show... I liked the fact that despite what they stood for, that Mr. Shore did not care for their politics, he still fought for their rights as parents to bring up their kids as they see fit... Quite a message tonight....

19. I think BL is getting its groove back
it was foundering, I thought, earlier this season. Just didn't have the kick of past seasons. I need my Alan Shore rants.
And he had a good one on Tues. night's show.
He was able to win his case AND do his liberal rave in court.

24. No such thing as a frivolous post about BL, scarletwoman.
:D

Best show on the tee vee.

Topical and over the top, drama perfectly blended with comedy, and just plain old horniness while larfing at the "fourth wall".

Yes indeed, reality with a liberal bias. :bounce:

25. You're very kind. I'm kind of a BL newbie, and I rarely post about tv shows.
What really got me hooked on BL was one of Alan Shore's closing arguments in one particular episode last year. It was such a totally righteous rant against what Gore Vidal refers to as the "National Security State" that I was absolutely awestruck. I resolved right then and there to start paying more attention to this show.

I love the mix of intelligent political commentary and sexual humor. It manages to be both subtle and outrageous at the same time. Very impressive!
