47. Duh! Duh! And, Duh!
This is what the democrats, who "didn't have any ideas" have been saying for 2 years! And, absent in that statement is any acknowledgement that anybody who didn't see this situation in Iraq before the fact, is a buffoon.

They're going to make "recommendations" which will be non-binding, and there is no admonition for the idiots who got us into this.

the launch of a comprehensive Diplomatic Offensive.

Baker -Do not recommend 'stay the course' or increasing forces in excess of 100,000 troops. Fugg 100,000 more troops in jeopardy.

26. "...no magic formula ..."
I found it interesting that the "experts" on MSNBC last night were saying that the fellows from the Bush1 group hold George W. in contempt. This is the failure that the old man was weeping about. He knows that the son is hoping to reject this group's recommendations. That was what the failed meeting with al-Maliki was about last week. The father knows his boy is out of control.

38. My main concern
is the Saudi push to get the US to try to "decrease" the strength of al-Sadr's Mahdi Army. The moves by Prince Turki and even the Washington Post op-ed by Nawaf Obaid, and VP Cheney's being called to visit Saudi Arabia, are all part of that effort. It is the context where the "leaked" Hadley memo makes the most sense, too.

Bush has to either admit that the central delusion he has had -- of being a great "war president" -- is a failure that is of historic nature. Or he can believe the Cheneyites, that he might pull out the miracle, if he tries something bold.

67. Sure.
It's not uncommon for a father to like one of his children better than another. In this case, he surely had to at very least have far more respect for Jeb. He knows that George W. has destroyed any chance that Jeb had for extending the dynasty.

No family wants to be remembered for the crimes of the lowliest member. And that's a normal family. The Bush dynasty still has a great deal of juice, both in the US and around the globe. They aren't going to fade away gracefully.

1) "Stay the course" <- no longer viable
2) More overall troops. (More embedded troops ARE rec'd) They're not available.
3) Division of Iraq. Cities are mixed, and management would be weak.
4) Precipitous withdrawal, would invite wider regional war.

Edited on Wed Dec-06-06 11:18 AM by The Witch
No, never any doubt, we didn't want to do it during elections, so we decided that early.

Chances for success: Anyone have a crystal ball? But we say in report, if you do what we say, it will improve.

Hammy: There's at least a chance, and we have an obligation to try.

33. follow-up is this all-or-nothing or can Prez pick 'n' choose?
a: It's recommendations, not an order, but this was the only thing that will get bipartisan support.
Hammy: We tried to put together a comprehensive report. A comprehensive approach has to be taken. bush indicated that it presents to the people a common opportunity to deal w/the problems in Iraq.

"a matter of faith' for us that we'll be stronger if united.
