Still not worried about McCain?
The last several times I posted my concerns that McCain could take the White House, I got the usual "he's too old," "the fundies hate him," etc. responses. I'm just curious if there ar still folks around here that still think McCain doesn't have a good shot at the presidency.

9. He's definitely planning on playing hardball
Just got this from kos.

"John McCain just hired the worst man in the world to run his campaign, Terry Nelson. Nelson was an unindicted co-conspirator in the TRMPAC scandal as a key point of contact between Tom Delay and the RNC. He was James Tobin's boss during the 2002 New Hampshire phone-jamming scandal, for which Tobin was convicted. He also worked at the head of opposition research for the NRCC this cycle, where robocalls from Republicans pretending to be Democrats were the norm all over the country. Nelson also produced the racist bimbo ad against Harold Ford.

This guy is pure Straight Talk Express meets campaign reform. It makes a lot of sense to put legislation through the Senate on public financing and campaign fraud, because that will put McCain on the defensive. He'll be stuck between the wingnut base which doesn't trust him on campaign finance reform, and his centrist chops.

And Terry Nelson will hang around his neck, as he should. This is a man who just breaks the law with impunity, and he's running the campaign of Saint McCain."
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/12/7/125833/117

kos thinks this will come back to bite McCain on the ass. I think so too.

15. He's evil enough
So I'm very, very worried. In fact he bothers me way much more than Bush. Smart evil-imagine! McCain will use the Bush precedents to take all our liberties away just to make himself more powerful. McCain should know better but he's sold his soul.

Bush has no soul to sell so it's not anywhere near the same. If it wasn't for Bush's incompetence this country would already be a fascist state.

52. Well he's already pandering to the extremes as fast as he can
With the recent about face on Roe.v.Wade just for starters. And (sorry!) but that "base" I don't think is very smart, so the fact that he changes his position on everything to get elected doesn't bother them a bit. Just promise them you will stop the Gays and stop abortion and you plan to kill all the terrorists and they are happy.

The media still paints him as a moderate. When he is nothing of the sort! They call him a "maverick" when he has done NOTHING substantive to challenge Bush or the neo-cons in any way. He wants more troops in Iraq.

So that is the propaganda. And as we know much of the country listens to the propaganda and never takes or has the time to find the truth. Any country that came that close with Bush and Kerry is not a smart country.

So if the media continue to give him a pass and he gets the extreme righties in his corner, maybe the rest of the middle will fall in as well.

He's a war hero! He's a moderate! He's a maverick! Oh yeah, then he just has to buy off all those that hate him in the Republican party. If anyone can do it-he can.

That's what I thought about Dubya back in 2000. Of course, I still don't believe he WON the election, but we all know about that debate.

McCain warrants watching, but I'm not sure that he's the right man for the GOP at this point in time. We'll have to see who else is in the running come 2008.

Newsflash: Most Americans don't know what you know about McCain

Millions of Americans (self-professed "moderate Democrats very much inlcuded) think McCain is a moderate Republican who would unify the country.

Plus, he was a POW, so, as far as they're concerned, what he says goes.

The Republican and Media Establishment have fully embraced McCain. They're not stupid. They know he has massive appeal to both parties.

We dismiss McCain at our own peril.

32. In 2000, He Would Have Been a Stronger Candidate Than Bush
McCain is widely perceived as moderate, strong on defense without being a warmonger, a clean government person (McCain-Feingold), and a sensible straight-talking independent voice. Regardless of how you and I might feel about, that's how McCain is perceived.

I agree with you -- I think McCain is probably the strongest candidate the GOP could nominate.

I do think that his age is beginning to show and be an issue. I also doubt he will get the nomination, since he is so widely reviled by the Republican base. But if he does get it, the Democratic nominee has his work cut out.

45. If we put up..
... HRC or Kerry, he will win.

Most Americans think he is a "moderate", if you listen to him talk sometimes he sounds like one.

He's great at going up against Bush on "principle", as on the torture bill, and then getting nothing done but declaring victory anyway.

He will be hard to beat at a time when Americans are really sick of partisanship, even if most of it comes from his party.

I used to dismiss McCain, not the last year or so. They are grooming him for this job, and I think he'll be very difficult to defeat.
