The whole reason most of us opposed this war in the first place was that we knew that we would not be greeted as "liberators" and that the "objective" of leaving Iraq as a stable, unified, pro-west democracy was not very well thought out. I knew that if we overthrew Saddam, we would need to stay for decades. We would need to purge the bathe party. We would need to install an interim government. We would need to hold elections and create a new government. We would need to support this new democratic government against the insurgency / civil war. We would need to rebuild the country's infrastructure.
If we can accomplish these things, and get out of Iraq in 10 years, then this war has been successful.
Moving forward form here must include an admission that this war was the wrong way to promote our safety. Once we do this, we can effect changes that will make the world safer.
