Why do they call it a "blue ribbon commission"?
And who gets to wear the ribbon?

1. Because they're usually comprised of people...
...who resemble championship hogs?

10. I was hoping for a laugh, not an English lesson.

But I do appreciate proper grammar, so thanks for the tip.

14. 200+ years isn't long enough to incorporate new meaning?
Especially new meaning similar to the original meaning?

15. Nope. If "comprise" and "compose" didn't have different meanings, one of them would be
meaningless. And I hate to lose any words.

I wish "quondam" was still around, for example.

2. Now, that's a damn good question. I hope someone can answer it.
In other words, fuck if I know, but I'll be interested in seeing if someone else does.

Thought I was good with trivia, but I guess not.

11. Yep, it is actually pretty amazing...
the articles are usually of high quality, because there is a very intense editing and monitoring process. That whole bit about Seigenthaler was actually quite freaky, and surprising because they usually find vandalism pretty quickly. I guess no one wanted to take care of his article.

13. Well, with an enterprise that large, things do fall through the cracks. And I think it is
so successful because out of all the subjects out there, there's at least ONE person who is passionate about that subject, yes?

7. From Dictionary.com:
"of superior quality or prominence; first rate; specially selected." I guess the third meaning, "specially selected," is the
intended meaning. I think it's more than a bit affected; makes them sound like winners of a spelling bee or a bake-off, or something.

18. Because they are usually composed of people who give out endorsements for prune juice, Depends, and
Metamucil...like blue ribbons at the county fair.
