Private AJ, when told Iraq did not do 9/11..."Yeah, well that stuff's way over my head"
This is a moving article by Arundhati Roy. It exposes the senselessness that is our invasion of Iraq. Just a few snips.

Mesopotamia. Babylon. The Tigris and Euphrates

On March 21, the day after American and British troops began their illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq, an "embedded" CNN correspondent interviewed an American soldier. "I wanna get in there and get my nose dirty," Private AJ said. "I wanna take revenge for 9/11."

To be fair to the correspondent, even though he was "embedded" he did sort of weakly suggest that so far there was no real evidence that linked the Iraqi government to the September 11 attacks. Private AJ stuck his teenage tongue out all the way down to the end of his chin. "Yeah, well that stuff's way over my head," he said.

And since this was written in 2003, she gives a feel for the utter uselessness of it all.

But why should poor AJ and his fellow soldiers be burdened with these details? It does not matter any more, does it? Hundreds of thousands of men, tanks, ships, choppers, bombs, ammunition, gas masks, high-protein food, whole aircrafts ferrying toilet paper, insect repellent, vitamins and bottled mineral water, are on the move. The phenomenal logistics of Operation Iraqi Freedom make it a universe unto itself. It doesn't need to justify its existence any more. It exists. It is.

President George W Bush, commander in chief of the US army, navy, airforce and marines has issued clear instructions: "Iraq. Will. Be. Liberated." (Perhaps he means that even if Iraqi people's bodies are killed, their souls will be liberated.) American and British citizens owe it to the supreme commander to forsake thought and rally behind their troops. Their countries are at war. And what a war it is.

And she ends with this statement of what GWB actually accomplished without meaning to do so:

He has achieved what writers, activists and scholars have striven to achieve for decades. He has exposed the ducts. He has placed on full public view the working parts, the nuts and bolts of the apocalyptic apparatus of the American empire.

She is right in that last statement. That is when a lot of us starting really paying attention. We who had sort been on the fringes of paying attention before. We could not make sense out of all the votes for this war...so we researched, we investigated. We discovered our country was going to change the middle east, and Iraq was the gateway.

1. i think it's horrifying that aj either doesn't care
or believes that iraq had something to do with 9-11.

it's the very antithesis of what a citizen army should be.

yes, you follow orders -- but following orders is no excuse for ignorance.

an i don't care if aj wants to take revenge -- but taking revenge on innocent people has another name.

aj -- whoever he is and if he is ''representative'' of a whole -- comes dangerously close to a personality that you don't want running around loose in a civilized society.

3. She is right
In the past the empire tried these things covertly. Bush's arrogance removed the masked and frightened the hell out of the world's citizens. Most people now have a good laugh when he uses words like freedom and democracy. The emperor is naked.

4. I think Bush has exposed that our military can't win anywhere, anytime
it wants to.

After the Cold War was over, and the Soviet Union dismantled, many thought the US was unstoppable militarily but I think Bush exposed that we aren't unstoppable. And I think lots of people just can't wrap their minds around that.
