So, I wore a shirt with a peace sign on it tonight...
when I went to visit my dad, who thinks that being Rethug will get him in with the Country Club Crowd™ (or the Kuntry Klub Krowd...haha. I'm lame). We ate at some lame chain place with Faux in the background as I proceeded to tell him my opinions on various things and, this older lady that was sitting near us kept on giving me the dirtiest looks. I'm sure more people gave me looks, but the true test will be tomorrow when I dare to wear a more blatantly political shirt in public...haha.

But what really got me mad tonight was when my dad said "I can't wait to see you in 15 years--I hope your opinions about things will alter. You critisize people too much." Um, sorry. I'm not the one who pretends to be Rethug because I wanna fit in with the High Society of the Country Club...:eyes: And have you heard the right's attacks against us? We get called un-American, traitors, troop-haters, America-haters, baby-killers, loose morals, even evil by some. Enlighten me. What have liberals done exactly that was evil? Last time I checked, we weren't the ones that started an illegal war to keep the $2 gallon of gas.

1. He's counting on you getting greedy and consumeristic in your old age
As one who has some old friends who were idealists in the sixties, and who went over to the dark side in the "greed is good" eighties, let me tell you, it CAN happen. But that doesn't mean that it WILL happen.

Those old friends have kinda dropped by the wayside...if I see them, I'll say hello, but I've nothing in common with them.

I still believe in the potential for peace (and I spent a load of years in the military, too!).

Smile and change the subject--ya only have one dad...and they can't always be perfect about everything. In fifteen years, he'll probably be the liberal--being elderly has a way of doing that to one. Buy him a shirt with a peace sign on it, hang on to it for a few decades, and he can wear it down to dinner in the 'home!'

3. Haha, he is a fickle one
He was a democrat when he married my mom, then he divorced her and took St. Ronnie as his hero, remarried now to a high-society Repuke woman, though I don't sincerely think he belives all the lies that they spew. I've come to the conclusion that he think's it's "trendy" to be Repuke and that he'll fit in better with his select Country Club Crowd™

My mom is still very liberal though, always has been...

16. Ah, that explains it. If you want to jerk his chain, tell him that Ronnie was a
Democrat until he met Nancy's hoity-toity GOP country club stepdad and her cheerful, boozy, ex-showgirl mother!! He wanted to fit in with that set, too!

Wise is the child who looks to Mother for guidance, in your case!! Looks like she passed on some good traits!

So, pity the guy and his high-society Number Two...I'm guessing he's not as happy as he lets on. That "keeping up with the Joneses" shit gets old after a while...

10. Good call, MADem
"In fifteen years, he'll probably be the liberal"

My dad is (was) a life-long Republican... old school. After this last election, I called and asked him what he thought, and I nearly jumped for joy! "We won!", he said. *juniperx wipes tear from left eye*

A couple of years ago he said he hated Michael Moore and that "horrid film". I asked if he had seen it... no. He watched it recently. His mind is more open than it's ever been. It's been a wonderful experience.

Never give up on a Republican father;)

11. Aw, that's such a good story
At least he doesn't think that Liberals hate America. And he didn't know what Free Republic was so that prooves he's not a Freeper either! :)

12. Keep your chin up, Tinfoil Tiaras:)
I'm 49 and my dad is 68. It took a few years before we saw eye-to-eye. Never stop loving your father and be sure he knows that even if you don't agree on some things, he's still your tops in pops. You'll be glad you did when you are my age.

Yes, Dad was very, very young. I was born on his 19th birthday. As my daughter is fond of saying,"Someone should have slapped those kids!"

7. Well...maybe it will help to know that I am 40 and my dad is 67...
and we're both Democrats. :)

I'm certainly more liberal than my father, but I find it incredibly annoying when adults tell teenagers, in effect, "Wait until you grow up." Some of us grown-ups still manage to have compassion for our fellow man and other "evil liberal" ideals.

My parents are big believers in the "we are our brother's keeper" philosophy, when it means that our brother would otherwise not have food, clothes, a job, or a home.

14. You need to develop patience
Ask his advice and listen to his experiences even when you disagree. Dads are great and they become even greater as we age and have walked a few miles in similar shoes. I didn't understand my dad at fifteen either.

13. Let their jobs get outsourced overseas
Let them eat at the food pantries. Let them have the bank threaten foreclosure on their mortgage. Let them max out the credit cards trying to pay all the bills. Let them go from a $50/hour job to a $6/hour job. Let them go without health care. Let their nest egg evaporate to nothing as they get nearer and nearer to retirement age. Ex cetera, ex cetera, ex cetera.

Yes, Virginia, it can and DOES happen to Republicans too. Then see how much they praise the Republican agenda. Tell your Dad AGE has nothing to do with it. The School of Hard Knocks doesn't discriminate.

Been there, done that.

18. You just keep being yourself!
Tinfoil...good on ya for walking a path that feels right for you, even if your Dad's politics (or fake political rethug image) is different.

My bet is he's the one who will alter his opinion in 15 years. He may then be grateful he has a strong woman as a daughter; a woman with lots of self esteem who knows who she is and what she believes in.

:yourock:

This comes from a dad (me) who is very proud of his very opinionated (and liberal) 17 year ol daughter.

20. Next time some creepy stranger gives you the stinkeye, try this:
Say it to whomever you're talking to, loudly:

"Ya know, I see a lotta churches around here but these people...I just wonder if they really know Jesus. They look so unhappy. If they knew Jesus, they'd be smiling. It's just so sad."

Freaks 'em out every time.

22. I'm 39, and I am MORE liberal than I was at 15
Some people become materialistic when they get older and become much more willing to shut their eyes. Others grow experienced and start walking around with their eyes more open. I hope you grow up to be in the latter category. :hi:
