Poverty and Red States
I've been thinking about this. I've noticed just how much these red state voters are voting in a party who grossly misrepresent their economic needs. I figure this could be something for Democrats to work on. Now I've made a map, but the only decent county map I could find was one the uses Blue for GOP and Red for Democrats. The poverty map is in purple. This is a gif:

1. Actually
It appears that the poorest areas of the South DO vote Democratic - it's out in the West and Midwest that they don't.

5. I noticed that
And the west is where Democrats have the most opportunity to get an economic message out.

7. Those are reservations
Other than that, poor counties in the west are Republican too. I've noticed it for quite some time now. Makes no friggin' sense at all.

8. It's the values argument
That and also the fact these areas have been voting Republican for years, even as some have gone into economic decline they don't change voting habits.

9. Also logging and farming
And anger at environmentalists for destroying their livelihoods. Still, you'd think they could look at the wealthier counties in their states and see that other places managed to turn things around without destroying their environment.

3. Very interesting
I'm wondering how much corruption on a local level has to do with the voting (I've heard local rumors that votes have been bought and paid for for decades), and how much has to do with a lack of education. It never ceases to amaze me when I find Americans my age and younger who are illiterate and proud of the fact.

4. Your map understates the relationship-do it on population and it's welfare

types voting GOP.

Only they take federal money and then have the state spend it - so they do not feel like welfare folks -

Heck they don't need no Federal Gov, the State takes care of them - with low state taxes even.

The fact that the Democratic States send money - I'd call it welfare money - to the Blue states is never mentioned by the media.
