The Great State of New Jersey
As a lifelong resident of the proudly Progressive state of New jersey, I was greeted with the news on the front page of the NY Times that OUR state legislature has fulfilled the court mandate to provide equal rights for gays and lesbians. It is not gay marriage, I am quite aware of the ramifications of this mandate, but it is a great first step toward equal rights for the gay community.

For those seeking the lifelong commitment of marriage, I am sure you are disappointed, but at least here in NJ, you won't have to expect a Sheriff with a shotgun poking it through the window for the rest of your life.

Welcome to NJ, please stay for the rest of your life.

1. Yes, hurray for us!
The much-maligned "Garden State" does do some stuff right!!

Quick question-- Would it be true that even when a state approves civil unions, it would still not apply to inheritance of Social Security benefits, since that's a federal program??

2. Regarding it not being "marriaige"
I am a bit disapointed, but you're right - it's moving in the right direction! Yeah for us!

5. Congratulations, NJ!
I lived there from 1954 to 1990. If it weren't for the insane property taxes, I'd move back in a nanosecond. Great people, fabulous diners, nice beaches. And truly enlightened on this issue.

:woohoo: :applause:

6. As a former Newjerseyan (i.e. monmouth) it made me so proud to
see that news. I find myself having to defend Jersey for all the same stupid and old reasons, I've gotten good at it. This fulfilling of the court mandate should serve as a model for others, hopefully. Go Rutgers!!

we don't have tornadoes, wild fires, mud slides, sink holes, trailer parks, hurricanes, and now, we are the third state to accept gays for who they are.

Welcome to DU. May your stay be long and entertaining.
