Chris Matthews on Imus .....
Is anyone watching? Matthews is saying that Bush "like any strong leader -- or dictator -- can't afford to lokk weak" when he is "going down" ..... He said Bush "can't stand Baker" and "doesn't even like his father," and is going to ignore the ISG's recommendations. He thinks that in early '07, Bush will try the "surge" strategy, and that America will respond like it did when Nixon did Cambodia.

5. No, they'll be back
You watch. They'll be swift boating their way back to power someday. Look at how Nixon re-emerged as a "elder statesman" after Watergate.

(Someone should have driven a stake through Nixon's heart back during his funeral, damn it!)

bush is showing signs of a mental breakdown? I think it is becoming clearer to more people every day he is in his own reality not ours.

6. the surge is what they've been gearing up for.
If they do get their way, and deploy 15,000 to 30,000 'trainers' into Iraq, Bush will likely feel free to try to 'win' the occupation by sending the regular and special forces to places like Ramadi to try to silence the insurgency, to the point where he wouldn't be blamed for the anticipated collapse.

I actually think action like that will deepen the civil strife, whereas, if Bush began to withdraw, it would send the message to Iraqis that the existing regime is no longer going to compromised by the heavy hand of the U.S. military, possibly giving more room for reconciliation.

Bush is in rebellion mode against his daddy. Sad, really, that our soldiers are his pawns in that family squabble.

8. "can't stand Baker" "doesn't even like his father"...
Edited on Fri Dec-15-06 08:34 AM by Virginia Dare
does the Chimp like or care about anybody but himself? Let me go all Rumsfeldian and answer my own question, "no, he doesn't, and this should be obvious to anybody with half a brain". Why is this news to the press? "Duh".

9. Reverse Shock and Awe is setting in on the GOPers
They are finally starting to see the monster they helped create. Herr Bushler is out of the chute and out of control. We tried to tell them it wasn't cool, to drink beers with grim reapers and dictators and outlaws, did we not?

10. Heard It All, Completely Agreed
All done in such a conversational tone I had to say, what, what did he say. I'm wondering what the old guard will do now that junior has totally dissed them. And yes, I do think Americans will be furious, it will finally be the end of him. However, the blacklash will be wonderful to see and it will be along time before Americans allow a president to behave that way again. It will make things a lot harder for presidents to come. So instead of Cheney "restoring power" he will have in fact weakened the office and the latitude it has.

11. thanks for posting this
When I heard that Bush was likely going to add troops despite a complete lack of public support the first thing I thought of was Nixon's 'incursion' in Cambodia. Interesting that Matthews is comparing it to that as well, although I don't have any faith that Americans will react to it in quite the same way.
