Vatican Priest tells Pope Ratso to celebrate Yom Kippur to attone for child-rape complicity
Papal preacher wants "penitence day" for sex abuse

By Philip Pullella | December 15, 2006

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The only man allowed to preach to Pope Benedict on Friday told the Pontiff he should call a worldwide day of fasting and penitence to ask forgiveness for the Roman Catholic Church's priestly sexual abuse scandals.

Father Raniero Cantalamessa, whose official title is "preacher of the papal household," made the suggestion during a pre-Christmas sermon to the Pope and Vatican officials. Cantalamessa said the Church had "wept and sighed" recently over "abominations committed by her very ministers and pastors."

A U.S. sexual abuse scandal which erupted in Boston in 2002 spread to almost every Catholic diocese in the country. Many priests were prosecuted and payments of millions of dollars were made to scores of victims. U.S. church files have also revealed that some bishops repeatedly transferred priests accused of abusing minors to other parishes rather than reporting them to police.

Such a day would, he said, help "reconciliation of souls" so the Church could get back on the path of doing its work "with a renewed heart."

Okay, so follow this:

If you get caught raping children, you get a nice retirement package.
If you ordain a female priest or try to get married while you're a priest, you're excommunicated.
If you cover-up the mass rape of children for decades, then all you have to do is spend a day not eating, and all is forgiven.

1. That's why I abandoned organized religion and became a Deist.
Corrupt church authority is, in essence, no authority, and I won't bow my head to that.

2. I Saw Nothing In The Article About Anyone Telling Him To Celebrate Yom Kippur.
Was it in a different article or was it just made up altogether?

3. I took some "poetic license" to make the headline more of a hook
I'm planning on applying for a job at The New York Post someday.

I thought about, "Foodless Pope Found In Shameless Vatican," but...

6. Yom Kippur DOES mean "Day of Atonement" in Hebrew, so I think "poetic license" is OK.
Besides, this isn't LBN.

7. Thank you. It may not be accurate on a factual level, but it's got metaphorical truthiness
The point was that The Vatican thinks it can wash away decades of the most horrible crimes in a single day by doing what every Jewish boy does every year starting at age thirteen.

Poetic license at work.

8. For the record, I am NOT the one who hit "alert" on that guy's message

I'm not so thin-skinned that I couldn't deal with the criticism.

It was directed at me, and even I didn't feel the need to complain.

Oh, well.

I PM'ed one of the mods and told them to at least not hold it against the guy.
