Send a phone card to a vet.. This needs a DU bump to Veterans
I would not normally post anything that asks for money, but I came across this and gladly donated 10$..

Im not saying you should give, but just be aware of this.. If you have the means, awesome.. If not, forward this to someone who might be able to help.. its disgusting that the VA wont cover long distance calls...

<from page>

Veterans Administration (VA) budget cuts in recent years have left many of our nation's veterans at VA hospitals without the means to call their families over the holidays. These long distance calls are generally not covered by the VA, and many vets just don't have the financial resources to call all their loved ones.

So Working Assets, Veterans for Peace, CODEPINK, Iraq Veterans Against the War and Gold Star Families for Peace have teamed up on a project to thank our veterans by sending them phone cards loaded with 125 minutes of domestic long-distance calling time. We'll purchase these cards and deliver them to VA Medical Facilities all over the country on December 18th.

$10 will cover the cost of phone cards for three veterans. $20 will buy six phone cards. $33 will buy ten cards. $100 will buy phone cards for 30 veterans to call home over the holidays. 100% of your gift will go directly to buying phone cards -- so please give as generously as you can.

2. I try to get to Walter Reed once a week. I always take phone cards.
It's the best gift you can give, seeing as how our "support the troops" administration charges wounded vets for calls to friends and families.

8. there is only a few hours left...
if you cant give, can you at least K&R? Cmon, I dont support this war but this is should be front page... the men and women at the VA hospitals didn't ask to be there..

We all give money for DU membership drives.. Why cant we help disabled troops call home this holiday season?

To mods.. this needs to be a DU drive.. If we care about the troops as much as we say we do, then this needs to be seen by as many people as possible...

12. Problems....
I tried to fill out the donation form and it kept telling me the form was incomplete and invalid, even tho' it's all filled out. So the form wouldn't finish and accept the donation. I've contacted Working Assets about it, so hopefully they'll get back to me in time.

My Vietnam Vet SO had a good point when I told him about it. He says why can't the phone companies, who make billions, set up free designated lines at the hospitals, to be used by the vets. They get enough help from the govt via deregualtion etc, you think they could give back a little.

14. Fixed it
Got it figured out, had a problem with javascript. Both of us made a donation and I'm checking to see if they still need volunteers for the distribution at the local VA tomorrow. What a good idea, thanks for the heads up.:hi:

the thought of the government charging injured vets in hospitals for phone calls home makes me want to put my fist through dry wall.

$20 bucks buys 6 cards.

I spend $20 on beer and pizza.

I'll just buy some phone cards and drop them off. I hadn't even thought of that--good idea!

21. I don't send out mass mailings to my address book,
but I did this once. I also asked them to pass it on to their contacts.

Of course I donated, too. Every little bit helps--and even a very small doantion buiys 125 minutes each for 3 vets. I am also willing to bet that it is tax deductible.
