Anyone have knowledge of what type of products are manufactured in the US?
I've looked for the past few days and all I can find are lump manufacturing numbers.

I was trying to find out what manufacturing industries we currently have and how much they're producing.

7. A Couple Of Things
Almost any college library has the SIC database or the U.S. Chamber of Commerce database. In addition, the Dept of Commerce has a manufacturing sector statistical abstract.

The United States is still huge in chemical manufacture and, obviously, refining. The margins in the chemical business are fairly small, and making commodity chemicals overseas for slightly lower cost and then paying container rates to ship them back here is a financial disaster. So, most chemical products have to be made here and used here, in order for the industry to be profitable.

Refining is much the same way, but the problem there is the huge cost involved in shipping massive quantities of refined gasoline around. In addition, the relative cost of electricity is low here in the U.S., so lower labor costs are easily offset by higher energy costs, and refineries use LOTS of electricity.

Food processing is also a massive manufacturing sector. (IIRC, about $300 billion per year.)

And, don't forget that we still are quite big in basic electronics. There are standard chip makers all over the world, but the U.S. still makes loads of electronic parts.

The Professor

18. Thanks for the lead
I was out of ideas when I couldn't find what I was looking for at the US Census Dept.

I was able to get a US durable and non durable goods total for 2005 but nothing detailed beyond 2004. From my local library I was able to get my state's total for 2005 but nothing national. I knew the information had to be out there someplace and I simply wasn't looking in the right places.

9. Recall that your local fast food is now considered manufacturing.
They did this so the number of manufacturing jobs lost during * doesn't look so bad.

Note that we do well in heavy equipment manufacturing: Caterpillar (CBS news made a big deal about this a week ago.)

10. We build shipboard furnishings for US Navy ships.
Thats only because products installed aboard Navy ship must be "Made in USA". If it werent for the Navy and USMC here in San Diego, there would be no manufacturing base down here.
During the 60's-thru mid 80's, manufacturing was booming here. Then around 1986, those companies disappeared. Massive defense contractors left town leaving 30,000 San Diegans unemployed and factories moved south of the border for the cheap labor.

20. I worked at Pac-Ship for years.
Is this the same owner that did time for playing with employees 401-K plans some years back? I'm not sure if he sold the place or not.

But that aside...You'll find manufacturing jobs around military installations. Thats why my company is booming. We build cabinets, lockers, berthing components and sanitary space items here. There are only two other companies in the country that make thes products. One is on the Gulf coast, the other on the east coast. Makes it really nice for us down here.

30. One in the same
He did 15 months in the fed pen at the AFB in N. Las Vegas. The pension fund thing occured before he took over the company, but he had a part in the decision as their attorney (all funds were repaid with interest). He said he did it to save the company. There were some other issues as well (irregular campaign contribution and some overpayments that didn't get back to the Navy in a timely fashion).

He got the company back five years after conviction and returned it to profitability after the Navy appointed a CEO to watch over it during his incarceration and tried to run it into the ground.

He's a good guy and has always been a staunch Dem, even in a red area like San Diego. He's done his best to keep his crews working, even when business is slow.

I'm glad your business is booming. Does it get tiresome working and living in the country's best climate.

you forgot weapons systems.

http://fas.org/asmp/library/articles/resist.html

Middle Eastern countries have been regular U.S. customers, but low oil prices have intensified competition for their patronage. Pentagon officials have recently allowed introduction of Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles-a deadly state-of-the-art missile system-and other ultra-high-tech armaments to the region. Since first agreeing to sell AMRAAMs to Saudi Arabia and Israel in April 1998, the Pentagon has offered:

$3.2 billion of arms to Egypt, including the most advanced version of the F-16, paid for with U.S. military aid;
AMRAAMs and associated technology to Bahrain, worth $110 million;
$2 billion of AMRAAMs, ammunition and bombs to complement a previous $6-8 billion F-16 fighter jet sale to the United Arab Emirates. The U.A.E. has also demanded the computer coding for the F-16s which would enable it to modify or replicate the jet's intelligence. If the U.A.E. gets the source code, other buyers will be sure to want it too.

the media was gushing over the vast majority of the increase was due to immigrants...

All we're doing is offshoring the work and leaving the workers to rot in the streets.

Why?

26. All I am trying to do is get a comprehensive list of what we manufacture
And exactly how the numbers compare to our previous years.

I think you've read far too much into my request. I'm not looking for export vs import, or any other such thing. I'm attempting to see which areas we're growing in and which we're declining in as far as US manufacturing goes.

29. I beg your pardon. I have seen so many threads lately lamenting the state of our economy.....
My fault for not reading more carefully. Please accept my apologies.

You could start with the Commerce Dept. Website; http://www.commerce.gov/

Or here ; http://www.nam.org/s_nam/sec.asp?CID=5&DID=3

Or Google "Manufacturing statistics"

Also, the Bureau of Labor Statistics might have what you seek; http://www.bls.gov/

The USA exports movies. Other countries make movies, but I believe the US makes the most and even US TV shows are shown in other places with subtitles. We only show about 3 foreign TV shows here and foreign films are a rarity, but ours get exported all over the world.
