How can this be
today we have a war that is taking many innocent lives and all the m$n has to tell us about is three misguided unfortunate souls. I'm sorry for them for being there but they were there by choice. The Iraqi otoh, well thats a little different, they didn't ask for this nor deserve what the blivet is doing to them, and yes it is him

3. The same logic can be applied to the troops.
"oh, if they didn't want to go to war and get shot, they shouldn't have joined the army."

Silly logic in either case.

4. What if they were okay with dying for their country to protect it...
but were sent to Iraq?

What if they joined BEFORE Iraq?

5. Oh well then "they should have known."
Just like the climbers should have known that one of them would be injured, and then a record making storm would blow in.

Like I said, bullshit in both cases.

7. not necessarily. Most join the military for reasons other than fighting
Edited on Mon Dec-18-06 01:40 PM by madokie
fighting is only a small part of a Soldiers duty. The largest percentage of these Soldiers enlisted before the blivet came along. nice try though

update

8. ?
One chooses to go and, at minimum, help others kill someone, often to kill anyone, while being shot at or bombed.

The other chooses to risk the dangers of mountain winter weather while climbing.

Not the same logic.

9. Sure it is.
One chooses to risk the dangers of being in the military when one enlists.

Same dumb logic.

11. I'm pointing out that that is a different choice because climbing
is not the same thing as killing or helping to kill others.

Not the same logic.

12. It is.
The choice to climb is analogous to the choice to enlist. You're putting yourself in danger in either case.

It's not like you're choosing to get killed in either.

13. Please comment on the differences between doing dangerous
things that do not result in the deaths of others as compared to choosing to do dangerous things that do result in the deaths of others.

You keep saying they're both dangerous. I don't dispute that, BUT one endangers only one's self and the other conciously chooses to bring danger to others who DID NOT CHOOSE the dangerous action.

14. That's outside this argument though.
There are people arguing that the deaths of the climbers is "unimportant" (or in a few instances "deserved") because they chose to do something dangerous. My contention is that the same argument could be made of the troops- that their deaths are "unimporant" because they chose to do something dangerous. It's the same argument, but nobody makes it for the troops because that's disrespectful and disgusting.

Now the argument that the troops are also signing up to potentially kill people, but that's an even more unfavorable argument against the troops, and isn't my point.

15. With all respect, I don't see how it's outside of your argument when
it is an intrinsic characteristic of the behavior in question.

17. Because I'm saying neither the climbers...
nor the troops are worthy of any disrespect or ill will.

18. Oh, I wasn't talking about respect.
Just carrying the comparison a step closer to something approximating "reality" in regards to the behaviors in question.

Though - I can find no excuse for killing others un-necessarily.

I don't think about whether I can respect the troops or not, because that IS a problem for me.

My concerns for the troops are directed toward issues that are less problematic for me e.g.: how many of them have been enslaved by other social economic classes; their safety; the economic demands that veterans have to place on the children of this country; the likelihood of future wars.

blown way out of proportion, and just a distraction from the things they don't want you knowing or caring about.
