Poll question: How many DUers drink alcoholic beverages?
Do you know it causes liver damage?
Do you know it causes brain damage?

I'm just curious ... since DUers seem so 'attuned' to what's healthy and wise. :eyes:

1. Actually, drinking once a day can be healthy for the cardiovascular system
Edited on Tue Dec-19-06 01:41 AM by Selatius
One can of beer, or glass of wine, or a shot of hard liquor per day can act as a form of blood thinner helping to prevent clogging of arteries leading to heart attacks.

In modesty only. You can't save up all your cans of beer throughout the week and drink it all on Saturday night. You're just hurting yourself at that point.

20. The best for this is one to two glasses of wine
and lord I don't drink for other reasons

but yuo are right, there are plenty of studies to suport this

By the by, dark chocolate, as in very little of it, consumed daily, also has a benefit

2. this was polled recently
there were a surprising number of non-drinkers (about 25%) but as with the polls, the most common response was 'not voting'.

Your poll does not have an option for "tastes terrible, sir"

7. I would need a bunch of options
I don't drink because alcoholism runs in my family, I hate the taste, I am a nasty drunk, and I hate the loss of control that being drunk has on me.

5. Drinking vs Smoking (obviously)
The problem with drawing this analogy is that when you become a danger to other people due to drinking too much or due to driving while drunk the law kicks in and you can face very real punishment. But with smoking you are a danger to other people as soon as you lite up. Its not as immediate as running over someone while driving drunk. But the truth is smoking releases toxins that others have to breath.

14. Um
I don't drink or smoke. And I am making no value judgement regarding those who do smoke. What did I say that was misleading? Are you suggesting that smoke is not toxic in any way shape or form?

As far as I am concerned whether a person smokes or not is a social thing and should not be a legal thing (except in work environs). If your friends are cool with you smoking lite up. I have friends that I gladdly suffer their smoke (it does actuallyt burn my lungs and is quite uncomfortable) because I understand their need/desire to smoke. It doesn't mean I labotomise myself and forget that its toxic and killing them slowly (as well as harming me to a lesser extent).

Whether you smoke is a social issue. Not a legal issue. You treat your friends how you think you should treat them. And they will be your friends based on that. If they are cool with smoke then no issues. If they aren't... well you have options.

21. Well ...
... when you extolled the relative merits and demerits of imbibing alcohol vs. tobacco, you were careful to indicate that alcohol was only a danger to others when drinking and driving. On the other hand, you said that for smoking, "you are a danger to other people as soon as you lite up." You weren't as careful to indicate that this wasn't the case under some circumstances. That seemed a bit biased to me. Indeed, I also think there are more circumstances under which someone drinking is a danger to others than just driving. Operating heavy machinery of any kind, hunting, performing surgery, dispensing medications (like, to a parent or spouse), and probably a whole host of other situations where impaired judgment and/or physical coordination can place others at risk of injury or death.

I find the cultural attitudes quite interesting. (Not to mention the assumptions.)

24. Well
The law does cover those situations for drinking. I have an uncle that did get in a lot of trouble for drinking and hunting.

And as to conditions where smoking is not hazzardous to others I guess I could have included smoking while sky diving.(humor)

Not trying to be a smoking nazi or anything. I assumed that the point of this post was to draw a comparison between smoking and drinking. I just felt the comparison was not a good one for various reasons which I tried to specify.

Thru a string of events, I was left with about 33% liver function back in the early 70s.

I just said fuck it and have danced on the edge of the feather ever since.

19. Red wine
The grapes used in red wine contain anti-oxidants which minimize mitochondrial damage in the cells, leading to longer, healthier life. Unfortunately, to get the medical benefit, you need to drink A LOT of it.

27. Forced to be a teetotaller
General Order No. 1 for U.S. troops in Iraq sez: no drinking. Not even at the Brit pub, if you're a U.S. military member.

On the one hand, it makes sense since we're all carrying guns & ammo. On the other hand, got DAMN, I need a drink. I mean, I'm used to not drinking at sea, but you get liberty ports. And after 90 days continually underway, they let you have two light beers.

I probably drink too much booze and toke too much bud, but something is going to kill me eventually.

Would I be any healthier or live longer if I didn't? I'm not so sure; I lost a good friend to liver cancer in October. He never drank or smoked, he was 58.

45. I drink occasionally
It does not do that much for me, but I like it once and a while for the immediate high it gives. I think loosening up is just as important as exercise or good nutrition.

I knew some alcoholic families when I was growing up, in some cases the mother, in some cases the father. Some children don't survive that kind of upbringing.

Edited on Tue Dec-19-06 10:30 AM by youthere
be it a shot of schnapps over ice, or a nice cold beer, maybe a (very)healthy splash of wine in the pasta sauce (and some accidentally overflows into my mouth).
I rarely drink more than one "serving" a day.
On holidays I do my heaviest drinking and usually try to maintain a buzz all day.
I haven't been "drunk" for about 13 years..and I don't want to be. I detest that out of control feeling. Give me a nice mellow buzz...yeah.

ETA..I almost NEVER drink hard liquor (or mixed drinks) like whiskey, bourbon, tequila etc..except an occasional margarita when we go out for Mexican food.

47. Voted "other"...
because I think drinking in moderation is entirely healthy, it just has never really appealed to me. I am perfectly OK with others choosing to drink (or smoke, or whatever the heck else they want to do), but I didn't see any poll options for the nondrinker who doesn't think "alcohol bad."

BTW, funny video on the subject: Tequila (pharmacy-style "ad")
