Ohio Repuke sues to end domestic-partner benefits
Ohio College Sued Over Same-Sex Benefits

All Things Considered, December 27, 2005 · An Ohio lawmaker is suing Miami University, charging that its policy of offering benefits to employees' same-sex domestic partners violates an amendment to the state Constitution banning civil unions. Ohio is among a growing number of states where public colleges offering such benefits face legal challenges.

1. Republicans are on Wrong Side of Issue
More and more companies are adding DP benefits and see it as good business. Only RW republicans will push for elimination of these benefits. Given the number of uninsureds in our country, hard to believe idiots are attacking any program that extends health coverage to individuals. At my companies there are more hetero couples taking advantage of benefit than same sex couples so this is not a gay issue entirely.

2. sex aside, joint benefits make sense for many
it's hardly a big deal for insurance companies to provide "employee plus one" coverage without demanding to know that the employee has some form of sex with the "plus one". no reason to call it a marriage benefit or a civil union or anything.

no reason why a single person shouldn't be able to get joint coverage for their ailing, live-in parent or sibling or cousin or friend.

5. You're so right!
Given the number of uninsureds in our country, hard to believe idiots are attacking any program that extends health coverage to individuals.

With employer-provided health care, as I understand it, the employee and the employer share the cost of the insurance. And as you stated, with so many people without insurance in our country, I think DP benefits are a great step forward in covering those the may not currently be insured.

Bottom line: the lives of Americans are benefitting at no cost or burden to the government whatsoever. You would think the Repukes would be all about it.

7. In Oregon during the last election cycle
We had a ballot measure that purported to define marriage as solely the province of one man and one woman (there was no indication whether this was a lifetime limitation, or just a one at a time thing). One of the arguments in favor of the ballot measure was that its supporters said they had no problem with civil unions or any other sort of arrangement as long as it wasn't called "marriage."

Well, that turned out to be a load of hooey, and Republicans in the legislature did indeed bottle up every bill that would have given legal standing to same sex couples -- exactly as predicted by opponents of the ballot measure.

The agenda isn't all that difficult to discern. First the Ohio lege "outlaws" civil unions. Then anything they deem tangentially related -- like domestic partner benefits -- becomes outlaw as well. Of course, they decline to engage in similar "intent of the law" postulating when it comes to such matters as whether their president can do a little domestic spying or go to war without congressional authorization. Republicans are experts at swallowing camels while choking on gnats.

9. This is, of course, exactly what the Republicans claimed
they WOULD NOT do if the constitutional amendment was passed. And just like in Michigan, they lied about their intentions and duped the stupid, fundie-operated Ohio public into supporting it.

One does wish this Ohio legislature would concentrate on recovering more of their dirty laundry money - frankly, the public there should get half a clue and impeach the entire Republican government.
