WW II. When the ship, the SS St Louis, wanted to dock in the US so that its Jewish passengers could seek refuge it was denied. The passengers then pleaded to at least let the children stay in the US. The response was that Jewish children grow up to be Jewish adults.
As a Jew I find Mr Goode's comments to be despicable and I urge all to condemn them.
Here is a blurb about the efforts of those on the St Louis to gain entry into the US:
http://www.jstandard.com/articles/939/1/A-blessed-voyager-among-the-damned...As the ship floated close enough to American shores to see the lights of Miami, the U.S. Coast Guard patrolled the waters so that no one could jump ship. Pleas to President Roosevelt and the State Department were ignored or rebuffed. Though the American public, at least in the media, seemed to empathize with the plight of the refugees, immigration quotas had been met, and no one was about to let anyone else into the country. A Fortune magazine poll at the time indicated that 83 percent of Americans opposed relaxing restrictions on immigration. At that same time, a bill in Congress, set to rescue 20,000 Jewish children, was allowed to die in committee. America’s gates were effectively locked.
