I Guess We're Down to The Skeleton Crew Now
Edited on Sat Dec-23-06 04:48 PM by Wiley50
Judging from the amount of time it's taking for an unkicked thread to sink enough
to make it off of page 1, I'd say that those of us who have family
other than our DU family have gone to be with them.

So, How about the rest of us check in
so we can look after each other
for the next few days

A natural family you are stuck with
and didn't have any choice in the matter

We who are family here
are here of our own choice

Let Us Celebrate that fact!

I have seen some pretty damned wonderful reminders of the FACT of our community here. The latest:

We DO (or is that DU?) keep each other company here. Sure has worked for me, I'll tell ya!

16. I quit doing christmas years ago
I buy presents for my wife and stepsons, but, I don't do christmas. Monday marshmallow has to work a couple of hours in the morning, she does in home care and people have needs whether it's a holiday or not.
She'll go to her Mother's then for dinner, I could go, but, I'm such a hermit, that and past history, I feel more comfortable just staying home with the cats.
So I'll be here as well.

All I can say is how grateful I am for all of you. And that as an early indicator I can say that this is a pivotal time. We can expect something very special soon.

The last two days have been great loss and great gain for me. And there is a point in space/time where great change is taking place.

So hold on. We're in for a ride.

22. Going thru the motions...
Still "having" Xmas this year but I feel like I'm going only thru the motions..my mom was diagnosed w/ end stage lung cancer, most likely it has spread to her liver, also.
She spent a week in a hell-hole of a hospital in Oklahoma that has no business being open for business (see below link for details that are just the tip of the iceberg from her stay from hell)...so between having to manage/educate the docs/nurses that gave her crappy care, trying to bring some reality to the family that has no medical background (I'm a nurse so they are turning to me for information), and then dealing with her having very limited time left, I have no real energy left in me for Xmas.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=173&topic_id=2046&mesg_id=2046

So my kids and I spent time w/ her and got back in town last night...I'm all for skipping the Xmas tree that we haven't had time to put up but my oldest is stepping up to the plate and putting it up. Shopping for presents feels more like a chore..I wish Xmas was still a week away but instead we are cramming all of our shopping into one day and will probably be doing Xmas dinner shopping either at midnight tonight or early tomorrow.

It is a welcome relief to come here to DU for an occasional time out this weekend.

23. HI there
I'll be here lurking like I always do this time of year. Especially through this Holiday season, as my husband is working Xmas eve, Xmas, New Year's Eve (our wedding anniversary) and New Year's day. He's working an emergency at a refinery, which means 7 days/week, 12 hours/day, until the problem is fixed, which will probably be the 2nd week of January.

We don't have children, and our families are gone. I have 4 dogs and 2 computers to keep me occupied until his job eases up at bit. I look at it this way - I don't have to cook! :)

40. Our Christmas is easy
My husband and I, between us, have 4 grown children, 4 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. A cousin who is like a sister stopped by yesterday, and we had a good visit. My daughter and son-in-law will be over tomorrow, and another son and girlfriend on Monday. My stepdaughter and her crew...3 of the grandkids, and 2 great grandkids, will wait til New Year's Day. My older son, daughter-in-law, and youngest granddaughter were over day before yesterday.

I tell our kids that what with in-laws, step parents, blended families, grandparents, it's just too stressful to try to get every single person together at one time. We all live within 30 or so miles from each other. I have desserts, chips and dips, cheeses, wine, and other things to snack on. Since Thanksgiving, I've baked 3 pecan, and 2 pumpkin pies, brownies, and several batches of cookies. I've lost track of how many different kinds of cheese I've served.

We've all agreed that the only gifts given to the grandkids and great-grandkids. We want nothing but their company, and their love. I'm lucky, in that I can check in at random here at my DU home. It's been so great to be part of this wonderful family here. My husband and I are blessed in that everybody in the family gets along, and the main activities during this season are eating, talking, and laughing. I wish peace to all of you here at DU.

I will be having dinner with the family on Christmas day, however, I'm pretty much on my own until then since my husband died. Since they are my family through marriage, I am not included in a lot of the family rituals that they do with their son and grandchildren. My natural family have all died and I really don't know my distant second cousins that well. So I will be here with my DU family a lot these holidays.

Happy holiday season to all DUers here or not during the holidays.

It's going to be a weird Christmas. The kids lost their grandmother on Nov. 5th. A good woman who was a Democrat through and through. They are pretty sad about it. I'm having a good week but that is subject to change on a dime so I'm not going to tempt fate by bragging, lol.

The cats are fat and sassy, however, and they are keeping us all laughing at their tree antics. They are loving the tree.

I am glad for my DU family. Family is not always limited to biology. I believe that we choose our family. :D

Hubby had dialysis today, I have church gigs tomorrow, our Jewish friend is here and will have roast beef with us on Monday. We just decorated the 2' tall tree, with an assortment of frog, raccoon and musical ornaments, and I put the real candles on it. Tomorrow evening we will light them.

64. Nowhere to go this year...
Will be just me and the little boy at home this year. Everyone else made plans.

I'll be here with fellow DUer's, too. :hi:

Holy Night
All is calm

Mother and Child
Holy Infant so

Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep with a belly of pizza

65. Present!
No free time at home lately, due to various reasons, but right now I'm home alone with the cat, who keeps demanding my attention with his incessant yowling. I understand he's been short on company lately but this is ridiculous. He won't STFU! I keep calling him upstairs but he probably doesn't hear me cuz he's pretty deaf. I have to shout his name so loud that I'm sure the neighbors are hearing me, and the closest is 100 feet away. Anyway, I'm here.

67. I will be alone at home with my two dogs,
enjoying a day that the neighborhood turns off. Stores actually close. I'm happy to have a day to do nothing but putter in the yard. I would enjoy a lovely Christmas service even though I'm not a Christian, but I feel like a hypocrite when I go to church because I do not believe the legends, or in god. Maybe I will go anyway. I just love that things slow down.

72. ...egh. I agree that we who can should take care of each other
during this time, which can be quite dark for many.

73. I'm retired so I stay at home most of the time.
I've had the flu so I won't be taking part in festivities this year. I will miss the Elk they are cooking for Christmas.

I'll try to cook up a story for Christmas day. That will keep me busy for a bit, and maybe entertained. If not, I will read a book and nap with my sweet wife.

So for now, beer and DU.

84. Still around too.
I'm still in town. Did the family thing during another holiday.

I hate traveling during holidays anyway. And the I in my Myers-Briggs kicks in about this time of year. I just want to go somewhere alone and recharge, and lurking on DU in the wee hours is one way I get that done.

87. Not doing any family stuff this year.
I'll be staying home with my husband. We are expecting our first baby on January 3rd and I'm just way too uncomfortable to entertain, or to be in the car for longer than 30 minutes. :)

Even though I am new here, I lurked a lot before I posted, so I will be reading (and hopefully posting!) during the next few days.

89. I have been working right up to the holiday wire
this week and have only had a minute here and there to check in. I am a bit grateful that things have been moving slowly as it gives me a chance to catch up, when I have a minute to check in, on what I missed while out in the work-a-day world.

I did leave my DU Family a note though to let them know that I was thinking of them and to wish them the very best for the holiday season and for the coming year.
