WHALLOPING COMMENTARY FROM ASSOC. EDITOR OF LOCAL NEWSPAPER

Since you asked, here's my platform

<snip>

But I would be willing to serve. And that being the case, here are some of the things I'd try to do provided you were crazy enough to vote for me:

* National health insurance. This is something that is long overdue. It would not be easy to bring about, given the influence of insurance companies on members of Congress, but I would give it my best shot.

Because I want to be a uniter, not a divider, and because I am brimming with compassion, I am not unaware of the distress this plunge into Socialism would cause some of our more self- reliant citizens who are already having to cope with other socialist manifestations such as Medicare and Social Security and the G.I. Bill of Rights.

<snip>

* I would introduce legislation requiring insurance companies to be placed under the supervision of state gaming commissions, since insurance is, at bottom, a form of gambling. With new, more stringent rules in place, insurance companies will be obliged to pay money out, not just take it in.

<snip>

* The Environmental Protection Agency would be given paramilitary status with the authority to shut down, forcibly if necessary, any company found to be deliberately polluting the air we breathe and or the water we drink.

<snip>

* The CIA and FBI would be dissolved and replaced by a new national security agency, yet to be named, headed by Jack Bauer.

Thank you, and God bless America.

1. National Health Care
is okay, but Medicare is not. :eyes: He seems to be confused on quite a few issues.

5. The author was being sarcastic about those who raise the "socialist" boogyman
whenever universal health care is mentioned. Read again from the article:

Because I want to be a uniter, not a divider, and because I am brimming with compassion, I am not unaware of the distress this plunge into Socialism would cause some of our more self- reliant citizens who are already having to cope with other socialist manifestations such as Medicare and Social Security and the G.I. Bill of Rights.

For those rugged individualists, I would introduce legislation that would provide them with one-way travel vouchers to a civilized, industrial country that is unblemished by national health care, provided they can find one.

The author's a proponent of national health insurance. You still really think he's an opponent of Medicare? What is Medicare?

10. one item is not only a good idea, it's become absolutely essential . . .
"The Environmental Protection Agency would be given paramilitary status with the authority to shut down, forcibly if necessary, any company found to be deliberately polluting the air we breathe and or the water we drink."

I don't know about the paramilitary part, but the only way corporations are going to stop destroying the planet is if we make them . . . and that means those that continue their geocidal activities must be shut down for good . . . the goal must be a zero environmental footprint for all corporation, with severe penalties for those that can't/won't comply by a date certain within the next, say, two years . . .

the actions and interests of major corporations are behind EVERY major problem we face today -- Iraq, healthcare, encroaching fascism, environmental destruction, GM crops contaminating natural crops, cancer-causing chemical compounds, job "outsourcing" and the ruination of American manufacturing, the global armaments flood, you name it . . .

if it's fucked up, you can bet it's fucked up because it's in the best financial interest of one industry or another . . . and until we solve that problem, we sure as hell aren't going to solve any others . . .

11. Great article! Just put a bow on it, and it's a fine present. ^_^
You come up with some great articles, and this is one of the best.

It lifted my spirits, and I can hear the faint jingle of sleigh bells in the distance.... :)

Thanks, and a happy holiday to you! :hi:
