(December 27, 2006)—Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan is calling for “an action” Thursday as President Bush huddles with top security advisers at his Central Texas ranch.
Sheehan was at Camp Casey in Crawford on Tuesday, but absent were the larger crowds of protesters that have joined her during past visits.
Mr. Bush hosts a National Security meeting Thursday as he takes a step toward deciding a new US policy in Iraq.
Also participating in the meeting will be Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley and Army General Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Pentagon officials said Tuesday that Gates isn't likely to offer a single solution but, rather, a broad set of recommendations for changing the course in Iraq.
A senior Defense Department official, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because Gates' advice to Bush is secret, said the recommendations "would involve many aspects of how we can do things differently."
According to a Web posting, Sheehan plans “an escalated ‘Peace Surge’ in ramped up efforts” to stop administration policies “that will only make 2007 bloodier than 2006.”
Sheehan and Gold Star Families for Peace plan what they call a “Walk for Change” on Jan. 3 and Jan. 4 as the new Congress convenes in Washington.
According to a posting on the Gold Star Families for Peace Web Site, the group “will be insisiting that an an immediate exit strategy from Iraq be implemented.
“We will insist that all funding for the War stop and the money spent on rebuilding Iraq.
“We will demand impeachment,” the group said.
