Bush is skipping Ford's state funeral on Saturday to stay in Texas
WASHINGTON - Less pomp, more circumstance. Gerald R. Ford's state funeral is missing some of the grandeur of the one for Ronald Reagan two years ago, a reflection of the 38th president's modest ways and lesser imprint on the nation, according to further planning details released Thursday.

Part of it will be missing President Bush, too. The president will not attend Ford's state funeral in the Rotunda on Saturday night, but will return to Washington from his Texas ranch on Monday, pay respects to Ford while his remains lie in state at the Capitol, and speak Tuesday at services for Ford at the National Cathedral.

61. Eh, lets try for some facts....
I hate Bush as much or more than everyone else but lets keep DU a bit factual. He's not skipping the state services. He's skipping the public viewing of the body in the Capital Rotunda. He is attending the services and even speaking. As the OP quotes but misquotes in the thread title.

edit: As I mentioned yesterday, Bush** does seem to have a thing about attending veterans' funerals; remember, Ford served in WWII, before most repukes became chickenhawks.

"Bush, who is on vacation, missed Reagan's service in the Capitol, too, because he was attending a G-8 summit. He eulogized the late president at the cathedral funeral service later."
http://www.examiner.com/a-479224~Nation_Plans_5_Days_of_Mourning_for_Ford.html

Bush will be attending Ford's service in the National Cathedral, just like the did for Reagan's.

From what I've read the funeral in the Rotunda isn't the big one, the one in the National Cathedral is.

48. No it's not a precedent
From all the articles I've read this is what I get
The state funeral is in the Routanda, and Bush miss Reagan's too.

The big send off is the service in the National Cathedral, but that's not called a "state funeral."

It's a mix of terms.

I hate to link to wikipedia, but this is actually pretty accurate on US State Funerals:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Funeral#United_States

"Upon the coffin's arrival at the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol a short service (the official "state funeral") is given with members of Congress present."

"A national memorial service is held in Washington, D.C. It is held either at Washington National Cathedral or at another church or cathedral, if the family requests, with various foreign dignitaries and government officials attending."

after that post-mortem criticism of Bush's war that Ford gave to Bob Woodward. I'm sure that's why GWB is having a hissy about this and his subsequent stamping of his foot refusing to go to the funeral. (I imagine.)

Anyway he wouldn't cut off his vacation when thousands of people were drowning and being displaced during Katrina. Why would he care about one dead President.

You can be sure that no one will be attending his funeral except maybe Condi when his time comes.
