Saddam will die today
The authorities will not want to add any kind of religious significance by executing him on the first day of Eid.

Saddam dies Friday... for good and ill...

1. The question that REALLY begs to be asked is
are we, as Americans better off without him? Need specifics of how.
Are the Iraqs better off without him? Need specifics.
Because I can't think of many good reasons anyone is better off with or without him.

3. I tend to agree, we will only make a martyr of him
that is perhaps the worst thing we could possibly do...

9. No kidding. Just what we want.
Shit. I doubt anything positive will be gained by this.

11. How do you make a martyr out of a secular gangster?
Seriously, Saddamism is based on the personality cult of Saddam, not on any lasting principles. This probably won't have much of an effect on the Baathist arm of the insurgency; they're already fighting as hard as they can. Even the people fighting in his name know he's a murdering scumbag; he's just THEIR murdering scumbag, and they can rightly point out how relatively peaceful things were before the Americans showed up.

He's about as well-loved as Nikolai Ceaucescu.

12. Shite, we've almost done it already... people were feeling
sorry over here because of the 'humiliation' of his arrest. Now, wait until the death video comes out on al Jazeera.

Sorry, if it is possible to f' up Bush will do it.

5. i always thought he held onto that job for a reason
he was the best man for it, which is sad to say, but also true. Lets see how many dozens of other people try to fill his shoes and fail. We should have left him right where he was - contained and harmless - and efficiently running his country with both security and order.

15. the more important question is "Who elected us God?" . . .
the invasion and occupation were crimes of immense proportions . . . and so is this execution . . .

will anyone ever be held accountable? . . . I doubt it . . .

6. Well, I hope the "Friday news dump" works this weekend, too.
I hope people are too busy, too angry with the war, to pay attention to Saddam's death, despite the media hype.

It's such a disgusting charade. Good riddance to Saddam, but this is not justice.

17. THe entire episode is based on lies and fraud
THerefore the entire trial and "Murder" of Saddam are also illegal. If anything he should have been sent to the Hague at least then there would have been a shred of legality to that part of the procedure.
