Small Nuclear War Would Devastate Global Climate, Scientists Warn

Even a small nuclear conflict would cause long-lasting global devastation that could kill tens of millions, scientists warned this week.

Within a couple of decades, 40 countries could have arsenals large enough to cause such a disaster, the researchers added.




A map illustrates how soot caused by a small nuclear exchange would spread around the world. Darker areas indicate regions where the smoke would absorb greater amounts of sunlight.

Scientists have predicted that the airborne soot caused by a limited nuclear war would destroy the Earth's ozone layer, block out sunlight, and reduce average global temperatures by 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.25 degrees Celsius).

Because of the lack of political will, we have effectively crossed the Rubicon already.

India is a volatile country. No Nukes!

so India must have them, otherwise there is nothing to deter the Pakistanis. And with radical elements in Pakistan, I think it is unwise to trust the Pakis not to use them.

if you peruse the article, we have more nukes now than during the Cold War.

Russia and the US are the leaders in Nuke sales throughout the World.

They want bigger and better, which they and the world do not need.

Luxembourg is next to go
And, who knows, maybe Monaco

as can Pakistan, Iran, North Korea, a few other nuke powers (France is probably more stable, for now)

Nukes is probably out of our control. It would take something like a "United Nations" to stop it, and even then I doubt it could be stopped.

It's a matter of time ...

theres no where to run!

I've looked in Fiji, Bahamas etc..
They all will suffer climatological problems soon..

We're stuck in a bubble and hostages of our government.

...at this time of century there are surely some who wonder if nuclear winter isn't the last best hope for the planet

i have heard proposals that such soot be placed in the atmosphere deliberately before it is too late
