Iraqis in Dearborn Michigan Dance in The Streets

Being shown on Iraq state run television.......I say if they are happy the man they feared is dead I suggest they go down to the recruiters office on Wendsday and sign up and volunteer to go and put their lives on the line and allow a soldier who doesn't share the same spirit to come home.......They are abusing yours and my freedoms that our forefathers died for here....

They are pissing me off...

1. PSYOPS. The Dearborn celebrations are being shown on US-led Iraqi media.
We are using the Dearborn video in an attempt to get the Iraqis out in the streets for TV-made celebrations in Iraq. Pretty transparent media manipulation/psyop work...

3. I know, what the hell does video from America have to do with Iraq?
Why would we be showing it other than for nefarious reasons?

Very troubling.

22. But don't you think it's a *little* weird how they pop up the moment...
we found out he was dead?

On American TV, it makes sense, because they are Americans. However, back in Iraq? Why should Americans be on in Iraq? It just smacks of propaganda.

8. True, but that's not the real controversy...
quite frankly it's blatant propaganda. Why don't they show the actual Iraqis dancing in the street? Oh wait, they can't because any gathering of Iraqis may explode.

Edited on Fri Dec-29-06 10:49 PM by ocelot
They have the same First Amendment right to express their opinions as any of the rest of us. How are they abusing our freedoms? I imagine that many Iraqis who live in the U.S. are here because they wanted to get away from Saddam Hussein's government. Why shouldn't they be glad he's dead? Not saying that I approve of the execution (I don't approve of executing anybody), but I can certainly understand why some Iraqi expats are glad he's gone.

Is this footage being used by our government for propaganda purposes? Sure. But that doesn't mean the people in Dearborn have to sit down and shut up.

36. It was undebunked.
ABC said it was footage of what people had said it was footage of, but that it was not authorized for release and should never have been shown.

It made a big splash. It was loudly debunked. And then it was quietly reinstated, but in a way that few noticed. It's hard to keep track.

the misadministration.

Big Arab population in that area. I think it's really a "Teror Watch Site", if I know anything about the idiots in Washington.

Hubby said the camera angles made it hard to tell how many "danced", but he was reminded of the 4 or 5 who danced in that other famous video.

Dearborn's Iraqi Shi'ite population surged in the early '90s -- Poppy Bush caused it!
Edited on Fri Dec-29-06 11:47 PM by Bozita
Many came when Poppy Bush failed to provide any support for the Shia uprising. The one that Poppy personally encouraged.

Shia with money and culpability left ... quickly.

I somewhat understand their exhuberance, but the possibility of the US government providing .... ummm ... incentives for the celebration exists.

19. I don't blame these people for rejoicing.
They had to leave Iraq or risk being killed. More power to them.

I just don't get it that there are so many people rejoicing in an execution of a person that didn't have anything to do with them.

25. I hesitate to mention this ...
But I will, just to add a bit of a different perspective.

A small Iraqi community has sprung up around where I work, and I see several of the same individuals on a monthly basis. Some speak English well and like to talk, which is something I tend to encourage in people who were raised in cultures other than my own.

One of these gentlemen came in today. He's lived in the US since the early 90's and is now a US citizen. I've never asked him how he came to be here; I figure it's none of my business and that if he wants to tell me, he will. But I have gathered enough to assume, I think safely, he fled Iraq with as much of his family he could gather at risk of life and limb, at least in part due to his opposition to Saddam. He quite simply loathes the man, the mere mention of him causing his jaws to tighten and a visible rush of blood to his dark face. Pertinent to note here, though, is that he's quite the student of American history and politics and blames a faction of the US itself for the existence of Saddam in the first place. (I really have no idea how he ended up here, in Oklahoma. He seems to have randomly stuck a pin in a map and chosen poorly, but he's a doctor, so maybe he saw some opportunity here he did not see elsewhere.) Also, he is outspoken in his opposition to the war the US has waged against his former country. He talks of the deaths of children while giving off a keen aura of deep sorrow, and he thinks of Bush as a madman.

Anyway, I asked him today what he thought of this "circus." He seemed confused by the question, so I pointed to a CNN crawl in he background that eventually mentioned "imminent execution" of Saddam.

"I would rather kill him myself," he said, rather subdued, but obviously not shedding any tears, and not expanding on the thought. He also spoke to me less than he normally does and said nothing else about that subject. He seemed deep in thought and a bit more aware of his surroundings, specifically the people around him, than normal.

My point? An opinion about Saddam's death doesn't necessarily have any bearing on one's position with regard to the war itself. I know people who were jubilant at the news of Reagan's demise, to the point of holding celebrations after it. I mention this not to praise or condemn that feeling, merely to note when one feels oppressed by an individual in power, one can quite easily feel jubilation, or something like it, at that individual's death, regardless of the circumstances surrounding it, often, in fact, in spite of them.
