Did George W. Bush really say,

“The Constitution? It’s just a God dammed piece of paper.”

Has this statement been embellished????

1. Reported by capitolhillblue.com with no verification whatsoever.
Considering there was no source for the comment, and no proof of it being said, I'd say that one falls in the bullshit catagory.

4. I file it in the "too good to be true" category, myself
Much as I'd believe Bush believes this about the Constitution, I can't really see him saying that.

It'd require intellectual honesty, a willingness to acknowledge his own evil, which I don't think he's capable of doing.

2. "The Constitution? It's not good enough to wipe my ass with."
Well, he didn't verbally say it, but actions speak louder than words.

5. The source is not reliable
It's a notch below the National Inquirer.

6. Google is our FRIEND:
Steve Watson | December 12 2005

“Last month, Republican Congressional leaders filed into the Oval Office to meet with President George W. Bush and talk about renewing the controversial USA Patriot Act,” writes Doug Thompson for Capitol Hill Blue. “GOP leaders told Bush that his hardcore push to renew the more onerous provisions of the act could further alienate conservatives still mad at the President from his botched attempt to nominate White House Counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.” Thompson reports the following exchange:

“I don’t give a goddamn,” Bush retorted. “I’m the President and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way.”

“Mr. President,” one aide in the meeting said. “There is a valid case that the provisions in this law undermine the Constitution.”

“Stop throwing the Constitution in my face,” Bush screamed back. “It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!”

“I’ve talked to three people present for the meeting that day and they all confirm that the President of the United States called the Constitution ‘a goddamned piece of paper.’” Thompson comments.

11. Yeah, but
this is the same Capitol Hill Blue report mentioned in the first reply.

You get tens of thousands of Google hits on it, but they all boil down to this one report with (understandably, even if it did happen) no names for the sources. The only name anywhere is Thompson.

Me, I do think he said it (sounds just like him to me), but I can't prove it.

12. It sure as hell matters if the statement is being used in a letter
from an aide to a Demo Congressman to his constitutents and it turns out to be a false statement.

13. I wasn't aware
it was being used that way. I was thinking in terms of the power of urban myths.
