25 percent of Americans anticipate the second coming of Jesus next year
Poll: Americans see gloom, doom in 2007
By DARLENE SUPERVILLE, Associated Press Writer
Sun Dec 31, 7:12 AM ET

... Among the findings of an Associated Press-AOL News poll that asked Americans to gaze into their crystal balls and contemplate what 2007 holds for the country:

Six in 10 people think the U.S. will be the victim of another terrorist attack next year, more than five years after the Sept. 11 assault on New York and Washington. An identical percentage think it is likely that bad guys will unleash a biological or nuclear weapon elsewhere in the world. There is plenty of gloom to accompany all of that doom.

Seventy percent of Americans predict another major natural disaster within the United States and an equal percentage expect worsening global warming. Fewer than one-third of people, or 29 percent, think it is likely that the U.S. will withdraw its troops from Iraq. Among other predictions for the U.S. in 2007:

_Slightly more than one-third, or 35 percent, of Americans predict the military draft will be reinstated.
_One in four, 25 percent, anticipates the second coming of Jesus Christ.

1. How does that compare with last year?
I bet you'll find about the same percentage saying 2006 would be the Second Coming last year.

55. One of my sisters and her husband, who get their
news primarily from Faux, said last week that she thinks so many good things are happening in Iraq. Her husband is perfectly fine with the idea that the "war on terror" could last for a hundred years or so.

I overlook their politics.

6. Yeats describes it, do you lack all conviction?
The Second Coming
William Butler Yeats

Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all convictions, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;

Surely the Second Coming is at hand.

The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out

When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi

Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert

A shape with lion body and the head of a man,

A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,

Is moving its slow thighs, while all around it

Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again; but now I know

That twenty centuries of stony sleep

Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,

Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

13. I think they base this on the 7 years of tribulation
A number of end time preachers had preached that the tribulation would begin in 2000. I find it interesting that 2000 is the year that Bush was selected and that probably a majority of those who think Jesus is coming this coming year are his supporters.

29. those people think
that the EU represents the anti-christ body and that an EU president (recently proposed by Tony Blair) would embody the anti-christ of the tribulation. THey say he will broker a false peach with Israel to last 7 years and at 3.5 years the temple (al-Aqsa mosque) will be destroyed. That destruction will bring about the 4 horsemen but right before that all those good jesus lovers will ascend to heaven and us libs, moslems, jews and anyone else who isn't a fundie christian will burn in the eternal flames of hell.

If someone tells you that just say, "dude, can I have your Wii? come on 3.5 years there that you don't need it? COme on...

25% of Americans expect the second coming of Christ in 2007

5% of Americans are considered by the surgeon general's office to have "serious mental disturbance"

1% of Americans are millionaires (incl. 371 billionaires with a net worth of $1.1 trillion)

25 + 5 + 1 = 31

George Bush's approval rating.....31%

15. Oh, ye who dare say aye
to withering crops and outright confusion
Who dream of heaven and orgasm profusion
Who kill or maim in the name of your lord
Who fight with intolerance as well as a sword
You hope for a paradise and all it could mean
Instead you look forward to leaving the scene
You wish ill on others who don't believe fables
Who view logic and science as far more attainable
You hate all these people--more than 80% living
And think that you alone will soon be rejoicing.

Does it ever occur, in your tiniest brains
That the majority beliefs are those that should reign?
You think you are special, and hubris is yours
And many sins of mankind are in your discourse
Reason and rationale are high among your failings
But that never stopped you in your pathetic wailings
Face up: you will die ignominious deaths
And yet you won't see the truth in last breaths.

We, the people, are disgusted with your loud, incessant crying
Your total lack of character, your bellyaching whining
Your stupidity, your idiocy, and I'm just getting started!
Your disgusting self-centeredness and being blissfully retarded!

The rest of us would love to see you all taken far away
But I doubt if a god's on the other side of that display
More likely it's the Devil with whom you share much more
And when that happens, the rest of us won't miss you anymore.

21. The figurative notion of meeting Christ in the air like many.....
other passages in the bible, is not to be taken literally.
The Lord says that those who trust Him will "mount up with wings like eagles" (Isaiah 40:31), but this doesn’t mean they will literally go up in the sky. When the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, He said that He carried them up on eagle’s wings to be with Him (Exodus 19:4, Deuteronomy 32:11-12). Yet they never left the ground. They came from slavery to freedom, and found a new relationship with God, but nothing dramatic happened to their bodies. This idea of flying up to be with God is symbolic of their state of mind. There are are similar passages like this in the old testament.
Actually, "clouds" are symbolic. The Bible says that the Lord’s mercy is in the heavens and His truth or faithfulness reaches to the clouds These passages make a special connection between "clouds" and God’s truth. This is not referring to a physical location for His mercy and truth, but to how great they are. Mercy and truth are not physical objects, but spiritual qualities which exist in human hearts and in God’s heart and Word. Since "the clouds of heaven" means God’s Word, so is the rain that comes from those clouds: "
In the 2nd coming, Jesus states that he no longer will be using figurative referrences but will speak his truth plainly to all. It will be a realization of what that deeper truth is.
"We will meet him in the air" symbolically means that we will be one with him in spiritual truth and understanding.

33. That's a reasonable answer.
We've found liquid water on Enceladus, there's probably liquid water on Europa under the ice. There could be liquid water on Mars right now. We may not discover evidence of extraterrestrial life in 2007, but I think it's a solid good bet that one day soon we will.

36. I think that %19
probably thinks we will find literal ET (out of the movie) not living micro-organisms which is what may exist on Europa (beneath I should say)

There is a difference between extra terrestrial life and extra terrestrial intelligence.

It might be hard for the %25 this thread refers to to make that distinction.

41. I think the idea that we will find extraterrestrial intelligence this year is unlikely
the idea that we might find it ever is not completely whacked out. The universe is a big place. I think its far more unlikely that we're the only intelligent life in the universe than it is that we're not.

I think it's conceivable that one day, we might somehow discover evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence or even communicate, after a fashion, with it. I don't think ET showing up in a spaceship is quite as likely.

But those things, with the possible exception of interstellar space travel in reasonable time frames, are all grounded in current understanding of science and the universe--- I think there's absolutely ZERO chance of "Jesus" "Coming Back", not this year, not any year.

Edited on Mon Jan-01-07 01:43 AM by angry_chuck
we are probably too far away (as you said with current methods of travel) to ever reach other intelligent beings, though they probably do exist. We surely cannot be the only ones. Maybe it's like contact and the really intelligent beings have some cool einstein-rosen bridge machine for super fast space travel. I feel confident believing those ideas are actually possible; much more so than I feel confident JC is going to save all those good christians. I bet we see the back to the future skate board long before any rapture. Hey, maybe we could ramp our boards into heaven!

He's been sure every year since 1998 that the rapture is just around the corner. But he's SURE this year is the one. He's even told my Dad that he "...can't wait to be floating up to heaven and look down on all those left behind."

I keep telling him that he needs to convince the guy to sign over the deed to his house and property since he is so sure. After all, wouldn't that be a sign of true faith in Jesus' return?

was tipped to be the Anti-Christ (according to a taxi-driver who told me all about Revelation. However, Blair's tenure as EU pres is over (last year or the year before..? not sure), so I guess it's not him.

37. The Rapture already happened
It happened when the Virgin Mary was taken bodily into Heaven. No one has kept the faith as Jesus wished it to be kept since that event! The so-called Rapture-ready are nothing but deluded egomaniacs at best, and mere contractual self-proclaimed Christians at the worst. Only he who humbles himself can enter the kingdom of Heaven. He who announces it through the streets is not among the saved.

for all transportation, Planes, Security, Bus drivers, etc so that people in these positions will be "Christ Free" in the event that they are raptured and I am on a Plane, Train or Bus. :)

They can test them for levels of Christianity and consider an Evangelist as a Schedule One offender with no opportunity to drive any vehicles.

Needs to go for autos as well, we don't want major traffic jams and accidents during Rapture, so the Govt needs to let these folks that think this CAN happen know that they will have their Driving Privelidges REVOKED until such time as they refute this notion.

If they don't want to be a PART of THIS society, and may cause accidents due to their beliefs then they need to accept the responsibility for their fantasies.

Look for the "Christ Free" label so that a Secular Society can live peacefully without fear for their safety :)

35 percent of over 300,000,000 predicting this would be good.:)
35 percent of 1000 is not earth shattering.... x(

350 people predict a cure for cancer will be found. :eyes:

The telephone poll of 1,000 adults was conducted Dec. 12-14 by Ipsos, an international polling firm. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.

-35 percent predict the military draft will be reinstated. = 350 people

_35 percent predict a cure for cancer will be found. = 350 people

_25 percent anticipate the second coming of Jesus Christ. = 250 people

_19 percent think scientists are likely to find evidence of extraterrestrial life. = 250 people

These polls are completely stupid and even more so when the MSM is reporting these same stats and most people will never see, only 1000 people were polled....

350 people predicting "ANYTHING" and it being reported as news is very misleading and not the truth we demand........is it?
