Why does US media call it New Delhi, and foreign press call it Delhi?

Why does US media call it New Delhi, and foreign press call it Delhi?

I was following BBC and Radio France today, and when they were talking about the Boy King's Excellent Indian Adventure. American media says New Delhi, the foreign media refers to it simply as Delhi.

Anyone know why this difference exists?

4. They're different cities, but they abut.

Rather like, oh, San Francisco and Oakland, Inglewood and Los Angeles, or Clifton and Bloomfield (OK, the last two are a bit obscure ... they're in N. Jersey).
