Anyone read Maxim?
I saw it in the store yesterday. This month's issue talks about 9/11 conspiracy theories, and makes a point of talking about how they are all crackpottery.

4. Let me guess,
It was about as convincing as the Popular Mechanics article "debunking" LIHOP/MIHOP theories:eyes:

Ah the propaganda machine never stops. This time with T&A to get the guys to really pay attention:eyes:

5. I didn't have time to get very far
They were clearly pushing propaganda though. I haven't made up my mind on MIHOP/LIHOP but they were trying to make it out to be that anyone who says it's a possibility is a raving nut that needs to be institutionalized.

9. Yeah, it's the same tactic that was taken with the Kennedy assasination
Insult and deride anybody who didn't believe the Warren Commission Report as absolutely out of their gourds.

But then in 1979, a reluctant House Committee on Assasinations was forced to conclude that the Kennedy assasination WAS a conspiracy. Of course no follow up has been done.

This is the same trajectory 911 will take. Anybody who doesn't believe the official story, who questions the story or brings up fact after inconvienent fact will be ridiculed and derided. If we're lucky we just might see a halfway honest governmental investigation here in twenty years or so. And again, they will reluctantly conclued that it was either LIHOP or MIHOP all along, but nothing, absolutely nothing further will ever be done about it.

6. I've yet to see a "debunking" that wasn't more truthiness than truth.
Which pretty much sums it up for me. I'm not certain on the details, but as a rule, whenever the other side relies more on what feels right than on what they can prove, it's a good bet there's bullshit afoot.

7. I wouldn't say i "read" Maxim... heh
The written content is usually a notch above "crap", but there are some other uh... elements that get well deserved attention.

8. My husband reads it for the pix, I read it for the humor.
It's actually quite a funny magazine, and if you read it enough you'd figure out that the editors/writers are more than likely liberals.

I just tried to look for a link, but a couple of issues back had an article on US soldiers in Iraq, some still there, others back home. It was a sad outlook at what these soldiers have had to, and still are, deal with. Definitely not a */Iraq propaganda piece.

I haven't read the latest issue, I'm interested to see their take on 911 conspiracy theories.

12. I read it for the humor too.
Believe it or not, I find the pictures annoying -- If you're going to put pix of women in your magazine, I say lose the lingerie altogether; never been a fan of lingerie.

I read one of the articles you mention. My favorite was an interview with a GI whose body was decimated -- lost limbs and teeth, skull fractured, months of therapy ahead, and he's laughing his ass off about the video of the guy getting molested by a donkey while trying to take a crap in a field.

My wife always makes me show her the Found Porn when I get to it.

13. "Found Porn" - one of my favorites...
Maxim's humor is probably only funny to those of us who also liked MAD and National Lampoon.

Did I tell you my favorite movie of all time is "The Jerk"?

10. I read that article
My take was that they determined some theories were more credible than others. Here are the theories in order, with the editors' assessment of each (actual quotes edited for space):

1. There were no suicidal Islamic hijackers - "To believe this, you have to believe that the government is evil enough to cook up a . . . plot against its own people in its largest city."

2. Explosives really brought down the towers - ". . . you have to believe someone could booby-trap some of the world's busiest buildings without anyone noticing."

3. Flight 77 never hit the Pentagon - ". . . many in the Truth Movement refute this as the type of wild fantasy that discredits their more reasonable claims."

4. The government let it happen - "<PNAC's 'new Pearl Harbor' report> gives theorists plenty to go on."

5. There's too much we don't know - "Many of these theories strain the patience of the most credulous. But dismissing an entire tree for one rotten apple may be rash. For those who simply can't wrap their minds around such an epic deception, many are eager to frame things in a more pragmatic perspective."

And now, since I have the magazine in front of me, I'm going to look at their "Found Porn" page for a cheap juvenile laugh.
