Senator Byrd introduces legislation to investigate secret spying program
Senator Robert Byrd (D-WVA) is introducing legislation to create an independent commission to investigate the administrations secret spying program.

"In a climate of fear, liberties have been sacrificed time and again under the guise of keeping the Nation from harm. Fear is a powerful tool for manipulation, useful for easing the American people out of their liberties and into submission. When the public is contronted with a situation, real or imagined, that inspires fear, they rightfully look to their leaders for protection from foreboding consequences. The claim of wartime necessity always strengthens a president...

But Senators ahve a sorn duty to check executive power times of crisis or otherwise. We are each bound to defend the consititution, and the liberties it gives to all Americans, in times of peace and war..."

3. back from where?
He is what he always has been. Strongly challenging the administration on the war, on secrecy and Patriot's Act. If you are referring to his vote for Alito--it was not any surprise.

2. The Road Will Not Be All That Long --- But He's Certainly Got Work To Do
There are a great number of disapointed people in this state, but not enough to let a Republican take our beloved Byrd's seat.

4. Agreed...
I grew up in WV, and have always been proud of Sens Byrd and Rockefeller, but the Alito thing sure did raise a stink around here on DU, din't it?

Repubs take one of those seats? No way! :)

5. Investigating the wiretaps and voting for Alito
makes zero sense to me. I gave money to Byrd when he had the guts to stand up against the Iraq War Resolution. He put me on a list and asked me for more money after his Alito vote. I wrote him back telling him to take me off. I'm not going to be happy until he resigns from the illustrious "Gang of Fourteen". I don't give money to Gangsters.
