Falwell Asserts Jews Can't Go To Heaven
Falwell Asserts Jews Can't Go To Heaven

POSTED: 1:45 pm EST March 2, 2006
UPDATED: 2:10 pm EST March 2, 2006

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Rev. Jerry Falwell is denying an Israeli newspaper report that he believes Jews can get to heaven without becoming Christians.

Wednesday's Jerusalem Post said that two Texas clerics, the Rev. John Hagee Rabbi Aryeh Scheinberg, had convinced Falwell that Jews have their own separate covenant and don't have to go through Jesus or the cross to get to heaven.

But Falwell says, "Anybody who knows me knows that I believe that Christ is the way, the truth, the life, the only way to heaven."

2. "I believe that Christ is the way ..."
Jerry Falwell wouldn't recognize Christ if Jesus came up to him on the street and kicked him in the ass -- and by the way, I'm sure if Jesus did pay an earthly visit, kicking Jerry Falwell in the ass would be the No. 1 item on his list of 'things to do' ...

8. Born agains don't think Catholics go to heaven
unless they have been "saved", too.

You have to "accept Jesus Christ as yoour personal savior and that he died for YOUR sins" to get to Heaven. I was one of these people, for a year, and then I went athiest for awhile.

youre saying (and completely understand anyone becoming atheist - believe me)

that said i consider myself "born again" and as i tell my mother repeatedly (who interestingly enough has just converted from protestant back to her catholic roots)
anyway i tell her i dont care what anyone says there religion is or isnt - if they are love then they are righteous (i say that in more of a 60s framework than me deeming anyone "righteous" in the religious sense)

im sure that cleared that right up (ha) but really just wanted to say that not everyone who considers themselves "born again" thinks in such one dimension and i most certainly hope i am never someone who tries to label who someone is or where there life is headed etc
when we start in the direction thats the time i know im not among "my people"....

fwiw

take care friend

11. Isn't that basically what all religious people believe?
Don't get me wrong, I think it's stupid. But do Jews think Christians will go to heaven? What's the point of following one or another faith if they all get you to the Big Top? You could just be a Taoist and then you'd never have to go to church, even.

22. The Jewish notion of heaven isn't the same as the Christian notion.
In Judaism it's not about getting there. It's about where you sit. Follow the rules and you get a better seat. Jews simply have a lot more rules to follow.

32. My point is
that this is probably not an uncommon belief among Christians--even as much as to say if you're not Catholic/Baptist/Mennonite/Coptic/whatever, you're going to hell (although most would hesitate to offer this opinion in religiously mixed company). Me, I think the whole invisible-man-in-the-sky thing is crazy to begin with.

48. Yeah, although I wouldn't go to church even if I wasn't a Taoist.

But not all religions, or 'faiths', or belief systems have as the, or even a, primary motivation for believing in them some kind of post-mortem "you guessed correctly!" kewpie prize.

Did Falwell ever hear about that one? HE presumes to take the place of GOD? Whatever God. Lip service to a god. How you live you life doesn't matter so long as you believe in JESUS. Lie, steal, KILL, cheat. Just believe in Jesus and you will be "saved". HALLELUJAH.

Think they will be in for a RUDE AWAKENING.

13. Here's a bit more on Mr. Arrogant, Pseudo-Christian >>>>>>
Edited on Thu Mar-02-06 06:50 PM by Roland99
http://www.valleyskeptic.com/stupid_1.htm#falwell

- "I hope I live to see the day, when, as in the early days of our country, we won't have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!" (Rev. Jerry Falwell, America Can Be Saved, (1979))

-* "The decline in American pride, patriotism, and piety can be directly attributed to the extensive reading of so-called 'science fiction' by our young people. This poisonous rot about creatures not of God's making, societies of 'aliens' without a good Christian among them, and raw sex between unhuman beings with three heads and God alone knows what sort of reproductive apparatus keeps our young people from realizing the true will of God.
(Jerry Falwell, "Can Our Young People Find God in the Pages of Trashy Magazines? No, Of Course Not!" Reader's Digest, Aug. 1985: 142-157)

*This quote is from an essay by James Gifford, an essay that was not meant to be taken seriously, but apparently was. I have erred by attributing this quote to Jerry Falwell, but left it in because I feel it is something that he will eventually say. The full essay can be read here http://eta.pha.jhu.edu/~danforth/arc/scifi/Menace_of_Science_Fiction.txt And thanks to Geoffrey A. Landis for pointing this out. http://www.sff.net/people/geoffrey.landis/

- "Billy Graham is the chief servant of Satan in America."
(Jerry Falwell)

- "AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals. To oppose it would be like an Israelite jumping in the Red Sea to save one of Pharoah's chariotters."
(Jerry Falwell)

- "If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being."

-And then there is the now famous Teletubbie fiasco where Jerry's organization accused Tinky Winky of being a gay role model.

Concerning the terrorist attacks of 9/11
-I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, 'People for the American Way' --all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say, "You helped this happen!" He goes on to say "God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve,"

28. Watch the beauty of nature
Edited on Thu Mar-02-06 07:21 PM by malaise
Enjoy good times with love ones, family, listen to kids laughing; help kids or seniors and you'll see glimpses. Lie on a beach or riverbank at sunrise, sunset or full moon with the love of your life and good music in the background, watch flowers, trees, waterfalls and then you'll be as close as is possible.

I'm enjoying these previous moments here on earth, despite Bushco and the other goons on the planet, because life is all we've got. I have no gods so I have no heaven waiting - I'm grabbing it now.

Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn,
for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they shall possess the earth.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for justice,
for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure of heart,
for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are they who suffer persecution for justice sake,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

It's only reflective of traditional Christian belief. If any Christians believe that Jews *do* go to heaven, it's a pretty recent development in the faith.

But sure, from a certain perspective, it's a bigoted statement.

His brand of fundamentalism would dismiss most people who consider themselves and would be considered by others as Christian to not be truly "saved"; thus not eligible for heaven either.
