One of the most prominent US House of Representatives Republicans on military issues says he will try to scuttle a Dubai-based company's effort to operate American ports. This comes as lawmakers' complaints about the Bush administration's handling of the issue spread.

"Dubai cannot be trusted," said Duncan Hunter, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee and normally one of the administration's most trusted allies. He called the United Arab Emirates "a bazaar for terrorist nations" and said the United States should not let DP World take over significant operations at six US ports.

"I intend to do everything I can to kill the deal," Hunter said.
Across Capitol Hill, lawmakers criticized the Bush administration anew after disclosures that the United States had launched a fresh investigation into a proposed business deal by a second Dubai-owned company...

..."Everything in this country can't be for sale," Banking Committee chairman Richard Shelby said as his panel began questioning administration officials on the deal. The Republican said the law should be clarified to take national security into account...

his president is finalizing the deal today or Monday. It's easy to have principles when it's a done deal. He can look really good for his constituents.
