i heard we are going to build a Fast Breeder Reactor for India and they dont

have to allow inspectors in to see what they are doing with the Tons of Plutonium it will make

(At least, right now, they have improving relations with Pakistan.) The only downside to the deal is that it would pretty much nuke the Non Proliferation Treaty.

.....plans to nuke anyone else in the fireseeable future. Rather, I think the neocons are trying to get all their ducks in a row, so to speak, before their time runs out. (the sooner the better :bounce:) It's a year, ten years, whatever time down the road that I'm concerned about this pssibly coming back to bite us.:grr:

But I'm more worried about energy supplies and global warming. It is going to become more and more clear in the next decade that the environment is the major story, as bad droughts and many other environmental problems threaten our food supply. Also, our energy-profligate ways cannot continue forever; even the "cornucopians" think peak oil happens in only 3 decades. The wars that do happen will be more and more clearly related to the environment. E.g., in the middle east, rapidly growing populations may go to war over the very limited amount of water available. Actually, this has already been going on: Rwanda/Burundi was closely related to environmental pressures, as described in Collapse, by Jared Diamond.

So if you're alluding to the theory that the super-wealthy simply do not give a fuck about the health of the planet or the economy, they just want to get theirs while the getting is good (then retreat to heavily guarded private communities) -- this alas is all too believable.

but I'm of the mind that they want to set up nuclear plants in "friendly" foreign countries and import the elctricity. This way the radioactive danger is far away from us (nobody here wants a reactor in their backyard - learned our lesson in the '70s), the energy giants get to buy cheap power on the backs of cheap labor (which will keep their profits at the all time highs they are enjoying now) and the administration can say that they have put the U.S. into rehab for its "addiction to oil". :tinfoilhat:

Wind and solar power can be profitable and not completely screw up the environment- hydro-electric has been doing well for years. Oil and nuclear simply give them a reason to fight their wars...

that electricity can't be transmitted that far. Energy is lost to the electrical equivalent of friction as it is transmitted down a wire. Unless we come up with superconductive wires, that is.

I think it might be that shrub wants India to use less oil; more for us.

Japan has built several breeders and has had nothing but problems with them. (Last I heard, fast breeders use liquid sodium as the coolant and moderator. Nasty stuff.)

My guess is that, like Dow & Bhopal, India will be chosen as the site for these environmentally dangerous plants.

What price did India pay to get their way on this issue? Giving Bushco the green light in Iran, perhaps?
