Soldiers can read G Gordon, Rush and O'Reilly, but not lib sites
Alex at Wonkette has a source who reports that the forbidden sites are catagorized as "Internet Radio/TV, Politics/Opinion".

Wonkette - blocked
O'Reilly -- OK
Air America -- blocked
Limbaugh -- OK
ABC News "The Note" -- OK
Al Franken Show -- blocked
G. Gordon Liddy Show -- OK

List from Jane at firedoglake, who writes-

And despite this 72% of US troops want out of Iraq within the year. You have to wonder what those numbers would look like if they weren't being blocked from alternative news sources.

1. Good post. Not much to add, except disgusting.
We have no voice from the mainstream media anymore, so I thank you for letting us know about this. I think we all knew about it in our guts. They can try to brainwash the troops, but they know what is at stake to implement the insane neocon dream.

3. That's the payoff at the end
In spite of this careful filtering of news, fully 72% of the troops have figured out what a clusterfuck they're mired in. Although 90% of them, according to the same poll, think that Saddam had something to do with the 9/11 attacks, so go figure.

16. reality has a nasty habit of biting one on the a**
And those troops in Iraq get bitten every day. No amount of propganda is going to change that.

13. You're damned right about that. But it is up to the families to get the
truth to their children and spouses fighting over there. there are going to be some very angry MFers when these soldiers come home. Oh, there will be a few who will say it was all worth it...they have to tell themselves something to justify their shattered lives. But by in large, it will be the same as when the Viet Nam vets returned home, angry, scared, discriminated against, despised by fellow citizens, reviled by those who sent them off to war while their own children stayed home. "Life's a bitch...and then you die."

that the Pentagon was so afraid that their ideas would fail if put up against any other's?

17. Spread the word! There's a way out of this!
Sounds like it might work for others dealing with blocked sites also.

http://www.wonkette.com/politics/armed-forces/wonkette-blocked-no-more-157745.php

Here's the Good News You're Not Hearing from Iraq:

Our boys overseas might — just might — still be able to access Wonkette. A source in Quantico tells us that a simple switch from Internet Explorer to Firefox might allow access to lots of supposedly blocked sites.

Alas, a Marine tells us that the situation is even worse than we could've imagined:

They also block The Onion, Comedy Central, and all computer gaming sites. We were told it is done to save bandwidth and to prevent people from loafing off at work.

<snip>

I also think it might be based on what people are reading. If a site gets a lot of traffic and it's not considered necessary for Marine Corps business it gets shut down. Well, except for ESPN and other sports sites. They'd have bloody riots on their hands if they did that.

He also added that these rules apply only to official work computers, and Wonkette is still available on computers in the charmingly named Morale, Welfare, and Recreation facilities. But if you don't want to wait in that lengthy line (and those computers still block the porno), another operative gives the simplest workaround yet:

Tell the soldiers to go to http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en, go to the section labeled “Translate a Web Page”, type in wonkette.com, and select “translate from: portugese to english”. Google will try to translate your site, but since it probably won't find any portugese words, it'll spit the site back out in English.

But hosted on the non-blocked Google server. So we can write anything we want!
