Discussion with my Pro-Bush, Pro-Choice father.
This morning I called my Father to discuss the outlawing of abortion in South Dakota. Somehow he had missed it. He's a busy man...my step mother is a Parkinson's sufferer and recently underwent shoulder surgery. I could understand why he missed the current events.

When I told him about the ban, he responded with, "That's not right.".

I immediately reminded him of our conversation in September of '04....a mere 60 days until the election. After months of trying to reason with him, a man who describes himself as a REAL Republican...not "one of those neo-cons", I figured the one issue that could possibly convince him to vote for Kerry, was the right for a woman to have safe, LEGAL abortion. I knew that he had always held that belief.

"Dad, these guys are using the argument that if you vote for Kerry...we will be attacked again. Well Dad, I can't predict the future, but there's a good chance we will be attacked again at some point no matter who is our leader. But one thing I can promise you:
If Bush wins, he will appoint at least one anti-choice justice and possibly as many as three, to the Supreme Court. They will outlaw safe abortion in one of the bass-ackwards states, and the process will begin to overturn Roe v Wade in our Union."

His reply:
"Oh son, now you're using conjecture. You're trying to read the future. Roe v Wade will never be overturned. This country has come too far to let something like that happen."

Flash forward to this morning. When I told him the news, he was silent for about ten seconds and when he replied you could hear the shock in his voice.

"That's not right.".

Another ten second pause.

"That's horrible.", he finally mustered.

With anger in my voice, I replied, "Dad....I TOLD you this would happen. You wrote me off. You still take me for a young boy without the ability of critical thinking skills. When the hell are you going to learn that I don't tell you this stuff without some serious investigation? When are you going to realize I give you information like this so that you, a terribly busy man, can make better decisions concerning our Republic?"

His reply?

"But son, IF this reaches the Supreme Court (can you see me roll my eyes on the other end of the phone), these new judges won't vote to overturn Roe v Wade.".

When will they realize that we aren't warning them about this stuff just because "we don't like a guy."?

God save our country.

3. The problem is...
they ALL think they're THE Alpha-male.

They don't understand. If they ALL believe THEY are THE alpha-male...then they're ALL FOLLOWING EACH OTHER.

The mindless hordes. Will they ever learn?

4. Well, the facts of life are...
he is the alpha male to YOU until/unless he dies or becomes incapacitated, and THAT transition (stepping over him to become the alpha) is complex and difficult.

Didn't you ever see the Lion King? Explains it all.

8. I got extremely upset with him during the conversation...
at which point he tells me, "Calm down, you're getting your pressure up. Calm down."

And then I really lost it, I started using foul language (he's retired military so I learned it all from him).

"Why the f*$# shouldn't I be upset Dad? This is becoming a trend with you. You suffer from the worst case of cognitive dissonance I've ever encountered. Dad....WAKE...THE....F*%$...UP!"

10. My sympathies
it is a no-win battle until the day he dies. And then you'll look back and love the old rascal because he was like he was.

Get the Lion King.

11. And I do love him....
he's actually proud that we argue so intensely but still end our conversations with, "I love you".

But I made it clear to him that his willful ignorance is making it harder and harder for me to feel affection for him.

5. The follow-up question to that is
"Why the hell not? What is stopping them from implementing their agenda, just like they have promised the religious right for nearly 30 years now? They are fulfilling a campaign promise, Dad. why should they stop?"

7. Actually...
the very next thing I said to him was, "Pop...he PROMISED his base that he would do this. And so far it looks like the only campaign promise he's ever attempted to follow through on."

6. The Supreme Court was a HUGE reason for me
I knew Bush would get the chance to promote these women-hating judges to the court.

I was out there telling people how important these appointment are.

I'm (still) sick of those who say Roe V. Wade won't be overturned.

9. This ban flies in the face of "real" Republicans...
They want the government out of everyone's business, period. The GOP climbed into bed with the RR when Reagan was king...now the honeymoon's over, and we're picking up the tab.

12. Show your dad Alito's letter of thanks to Dobson
Here is a link to an article about it:

http://www.gazette.com/display.php?id=1315195&secid=1

After you give (or send it) the article to your dad, ask him if he still thinks the USSC will not overturn Roe v Wade.

It sounds like your dad is troubled but still can't yet accept what is really happening. Maybe Alito's letter will help, even it only a little bit, to move closer to accepting what the bush cabal's agenda is.

13. Unfortunately....
there is nothing in that letter that out and out states that Alito plans on banning abortion.

Now...you and I are bright enough to read between the lines.

But I can promise you, Pops will have the same reply as Allard. Especially since he's a big Allard supporter.
