South Dakotans split on Abortion ban according to new poll
45% favor the new ban on abortions and 45% oppose it in South Dakota.
47% believe abortions are too easy to get in SD, 21% say too hard, 21% say "about right".

60% say abortion is "morally wrong" most of the time.

Despite the split on the abortion issue, Gov. Mike Rounds remains popular in the state.

1. WTF? 47% believe abortions too easy to get in SD?
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/22/AR2006022202424.html

Even without this latest ban, South Dakota was already one of the most difficult states in the country in which to get an abortion, those on both sides of the issue say. It is one of three states with only one abortion provider (Mississippi and North Dakota are the others), and its one clinic, the Planned Parenthood clinic in Sioux Falls, offers the procedure only once a week. Four doctors who fly in from Minnesota on a rotating basis perform the abortions, since no doctor in South Dakota will do so because of the heavy stigma attached.

About 800 abortions are performed each year in South Dakota, which has a population of 770,000 spread out over 77,000 square miles. Last year, South Dakota passed five laws to restrict abortions, including one that would compel doctors to tell women that they would be ending the life of a "whole, separate, unique human being." That law has been blocked by a lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood.

<interesting snip>

Hunt (Rep. sponsor of bill) has also said that when the inevitable challenge to the ban is filed in court, the ban's supporters will be prepared for a costly court fight with $1 million already pledged by "an anonymous donor."

4. Well, when your information comes from the bullypulpit
you're likely to "believe" a lot of things.

2. "47% believe abortions are too easy to get in SD...."
WTF? It's my understanding that there is only one clinic that performs abortions IN THE ENTIRE STATE, it has limited hours, and the doctors have to travel in from adjacent states because they can't find enough locally to staff it.

5. Yes, that was even on national news. I'd say they're obsessed.

3. Isn't it a little too soon to tell about his popularity?
He only signed this into law yesterday! Strong opposition hasn't had a chance to show up yet.

I really have no idea how many abortions there are in SD. It's a pretty low populated State.
