can we not make adoption a target in the fight for reproductive freedom?
Choice is choice. I support any woman in her choice regarding her own body, whether it be to carry the pregnancy to full term and keep the child, to carry the pregnancy to full term and place the child for adoption, or to terminate the pregnancy.

But I'm seeing some posts tonight that are aiming the artillery at adoption. Our son, Christopher, came to us through open adoption - his birthparents found our letter on the web, contacted us via email, and made an informed decision about what to do. We have a relationship with them and are in contact as often as they want. Chris will know them and they him. He will know who they are and, at their discretion, what directed them to their decision to place him with us.

The people involved in adoption - the child, the birthparents and the adoptive parents - are not the enemy, folks.

4. I'd like to think that it's more
frustration at the current attacks on Roe. But yeah.

6. Of course, and Howard Dean has touched on this subject
Edited on Tue Mar-07-06 07:15 PM by rocknation
He said that abortion should be dovetailed into overall reproductive/medical/privacy issues (choice, adoption, living wills, catastrophic illnesses, elder care, national health insurance, etc.). Like gay marriage, the right has turned abortion into a sensationalistic, red herring "wedge issue." What we should be working toward is putting them both back into context.

8. lol re: after school special
:D You might want to introduce yourself to some of your fellow DUers who only know "fucked up adopted kids".

Thanks, xchrom. We still have folks bombarding us with horror stories of what might happen if we don't avoid Chris' birthparents like the plague.

9. Oh, God ... I certainly hope not!
What rationale could anyone have for attacking adoption?

11. I can see where it was done badly in the past.
Taking the newborn out of the arms of the birthmother, if said newborn ever even got there, never to be seen again while the adoptive parents play some game as if adoption were a great evil or proof thereof, isn't the best option.

I think most of the current opposition arises out of past stupidities.

15. Personal Privacy is the Issue ..
Edited on Tue Mar-07-06 08:26 PM by radio4progressives
Period end of story..

whether or not the discussion is same sex relationships, assisted living, assisted dying, terminating pregnancy, adoption matters, (such as yours), decisions on life support on terminal illnesses etc..

the issue is privacy.

Privacy is the Issue. Our Constitution protects our rights to personal privacy - but these fucking fascists christians are imposing their lunacy on our lives, which they have no business, nor have they any right.

the second underpinning issue is blatent hypocrisy.

Their so called interest in "right to life" or protection of life ends when the unwanted child is born. when that unwanted child needs shelter, food, education, love, support - and it is not there because suddenly libertarian values of "don't tread on me" - and so the unwanted child becomes a juevenile delinquent, a drug addict and thrown in the penitentury for drugs or worse - and suddenly finds itself with a death sentence conviction - then where are the so called culture of life proponents?

no where to be found.
