One of my profs in my Master's Program initiated International Women's Day in the USA. Bill Clinton signed it!

Her most unique project, however, has been a seven-year crusade to win official recognition of International Women's Day, an eighty-year world-wide tradition of honoring women on March 8th of every year. Upon her arrival to the US, Pozniak was surprised to discover that Women's Day isn't widely celebrated in this country, and has since worked tirelessly for official recognition of the holiday. Her efforts have led to the first Women's Day proclamations from the Mayor of Los Angeles and the California Governor, and “In 1994, at Beata’s suggestion Congresswoman Maxine Waters introduced and arranged for passage of the first bill in the history of the United States for national recognition of the holiday (H.J. Res. 316). Designating March 8, 1994 as International Women’s Day”. .... as the official proclamation reads and recently has been honored by Mayor Riordan, and Councilmember Jackie Goldberg saluted her and commended Women’s Day USA for their efforts in establishing International Women’s Day as a day to be celebrated and commemorated around the world.

Pozniak also created an annual International Women's Day event for the entertainment industry; the many participants in her Women's Day events include actors Miranda Richardson, Diane Lane, Paul Sorvino, Dyan Cannon, Shirley Knight, Polly Draper, Beah Richards, Brenda Blethyn, Tippi Hedren, Illeana Douglas, news journalist Giselle Fernandez, musician/composer Stevie Wonder, Nenad Bach, feminist author Betty Friedan, producers Jan Chapman, Robert Wise and Sarah Pillsbury; directors Bill Duke, Allison Anders and former State Senator Tom Hayden, and first female Prime Minister of Canada Kim Campbell. Pozniak established Women's Day USA a non-profit, non-partisan, educational organization (supported by it’s advisory board like Gloria Allred, Peter Dekom, George Spiro Dibie ASC, Holly Hunter, Gale Anne Hurd, Sarah Pillsbury, Gloria Steinem, Hon. Maxine Waters, Alfre Woodard, and others), and is former Chair of Women in Film International.
